Emotional Message From Mark Daigneault as OKC Returns to NBA Finals

As the Oklahoma City Thunder prepare for their first NBA Finals appearance since 2012, head coach Daigneault took a moment to reflect on the franchise’s journey—and the fans who made it possible.

Speaking ahead of the Finals matchup against the Indiana Pacers on Friday, June 6 (Manila time), Daigneault expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering support he and his team received through the organization’s rebuild.

“The fans are unbelievably enthusiastic about the team,” Daigneault said. “When we were rebuilding and we were winning a lot less than we were losing, the support and encouragement we got from our fans was really telling.”

Since taking over as head coach in 2020, Daigneault has overseen a methodical climb from the bottom of the standings. His first season saw the Thunder finish 22-50. A 24-58 campaign followed in 2021-22, then steady progress in 2022-23 with a 40-42 record.

The real leap came in 2023-24, when the team posted a 57-25 mark. This season, the Thunder surged to an NBA-best 68-14, culminating in a Finals berth under the 40-year-old coach’s leadership.

The road was far from easy. Unlike Oklahoma City’s previous Finals run, this roster was built without established superstars. Daigneault, who served as an assistant under Billy Donovan beginning in 2016 before taking over as head coach, had to mold a young, unproven group into a contender. He emphasized a steady, day-by-day approach—one he still follows.

“I try not to operate with any expectations,” he said. “[I want to] just, you know, do my best every day, help everybody else to do their best every day and, and see where that lands us.”

As the Thunder gear up for their shot at a title, Daigneault remains grounded, with gratitude for both the grind and the people who stayed loyal throughout it.
