March Madness 2025 Prize Money: How Much Will Florida or Houston Make After NCAA Championship Win?

The Florida Gators and Houston Cougars will face off in the NCAA Championship Game on Monday night. How much money is on the line?

This year’s NCAA tournament has delivered everything fans could hope for — buzzer-beaters, upsets, and unforgettable performances. On April 5, the Florida Gators powered past Auburn in a gritty 79–73 battle to punch their ticket to the National Championship. Meanwhile, the Houston Cougars edged out the Duke Blue Devils in a nail-biting 70–67 win. Now, the two schools will clash on Monday night with a national title on the line.

With March Madness wrapping up, one question still echoes beyond the buzzer: how much will the Gators or Cougars earn by winning the NCAA Championship?

The Prize Money For the NCAA Tournament

March Madness is far more than just a basketball tournament — it’s a massive money-making machine. In the 2024 fiscal year, the NCAA pulled in a staggering $1.38 billion in total revenue, with a huge chunk of that coming directly from the men’s tournament. In fact, over $900 million was generated from March Madness alone, highlighting just how financially powerful the event has become.

However, the conferences or the teams are not paid out directly; instead, a complicated “unit” system is used. In the men’s NCAA tournament, each game a team plays — except the championship — earns their conference a “unit,” which holds a value of around $2 million and is paid over six years, as Front Office Sports detailed. This system turns a deep tournament run into more than just a shot at the title; it’s also a major financial win.

Back in 2024, the total payout for men’s tournament games reached an impressive $226 million, showing just how much money is tied to on-court success.

Each year, the NCAA secures close to a billion dollars through its media rights deals with CBS and Warner Bros. Discovery. This revenue is distributed across all 32 conferences that have teams in the tournament. Conferences earn extra units not only for teams that receive at-large bids but also for every round their schools advance in.

In total, there’s an estimated $264 million on the line — around $128 million tied to the 64 units in play during this month’s tournament, plus another $136 million already designated for the 68 teams that earned a spot in the bracket.

Now, if we look at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) as an example, its teams played 17 games during the 2024 tournament and brought in roughly $34 million as a result. Fast forward to 2025, with 14 SEC teams making it into the tournament, the conference is expected to earn $70 million, showing how participation and performance directly boost the financial rewards.

So, who gets the money and how much? As mentioned before, the NCAA pays these earnings to the conferences, not the individual schools. From there, each conference has its own method of distribution, so it’s difficult to project how much actual money Florida or Houston will get with a win.

In the end, the financial impact of a deep March Madness run stretches well beyond the nets being cut down. Whether it’s Florida or Houston who lifts the trophy Monday night, both programs have already made their conferences millions and their universities proud.

The Gators entered the postseason with a dominant regular-season record of 35-4, finishing as the second-best team in the SEC. The Cougars wrapped up their regular season with an impressive 35-4 record, standing tall atop the Big 12.

Entering Monday’s matchup, Houston’s L.J. Cryer has been a consistent scoring threat, averaging 18.6 points per game, and will be one of the key players to watch. On the other side, Florida’s Walter Clayton Jr. has been nothing short of phenomenal, putting up 24.6 points per game throughout the tournament.

The much-anticipated matchup between Florida and Houston tips off tonight, April 7, at 8:50 p.m. ET. Fans can catch all the action live on CBS or stream it for free on the NCAA’s March Madness Live app.
