The Trade That Shook the NBA: Luka Dončić to the Lakers

Many have called the Feb 2025 trade that sent Dončić to the Lakers one of the most shocking deals in sports history. Trading a player of Dončić’s caliber as he enters his prime was already controversial, but Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison’s failure to secure the best possible return made the backlash even worse.

The result was instantaneous. Dallas fans were out protesting against the organization, with ‘fire Nico’ becoming the go-to cheer at any Mavericks game. And although the team landed the No. 1 lottery pick during the draft, the fan base had already lost trust in their team.

Complete Details From Dončić-Lakers Trade

  • Lakers received: Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris.
  • Mavericks received: Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick.
  • Utah Jazz received: Jalen Hood-Schifino, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2025 second-round pick (via Clippers).

The trade was so unexpected that some even questioned longtime NBA insider Shams Charania, speculating his social media account had been hacked.

All fingers soon pointed to Harrison, who publicly defended the move.

“We think defense wins championships and we’re bringing in one of the best two-way players in the league,” Harrison said. “…We feel like we’re built to win now as well as in the future.”

He believed Anthony Davis’ defensive prowess was exactly what the Mavericks needed for long-term success.

“Time will tell if I’m right,” Harrison added.

Less than a year later, on Nov. 11, 2025, the Mavericks fired Harrison as Dončić was flourishing in Los Angeles (averaging 37.1 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 9.1 assists per game), while the Mavericks stumbled to a 3-8 record, with team owner Patrick Dumont also taking “accountability” for the trade.

Meanwhile, Davis, the Mavericks’ key acquisition, has struggled with injuries, appearing in just 20 games this season and averaging 20.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Dallas has continued to struggle, sitting at 19-26 and outside the play-in picture.

The Lakers, meanwhile, are doing better. Sitting fifth in the Western Conference with a 26-17 record, Dončić is averaging 33.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game, making Los Angeles the clear winner of the blockbuster trade, at least for now.

Dončić is playing at an elite level now, and he gives the Lakers the security that their future is in safe hands. This is considering that LeBron James’ career is nearing an end, and Dončić will surely be the face of the franchise in the coming years, if he wasn’t already.
