NBA World Reacts to Luka Dončic’s Devastating Injury Update After MRI Results Reveal Bad News: ‘This Sucks’

Luka Dončić's indefinite absence with a left hamstring injury could effectively end the Los Angeles Lakers' playoff hopes.

The Los Angeles Lakers looked like they were putting it together until the Oklahoma City Thunder tore them to shreds Thursday night. Just when it couldn’t get any worse for them, Luka Dončić hurt his hamstring in the process. Suffering a blowout is bad enough, but the Lakers just got some really bad news on top of all that.

What to Know About Luka Dončić’s Hamstring Injury

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Dončić will miss the rest of the regular season. Even worse than that, there’s no exact timetable for his return.

It’s fair to suggest that this was probably the worst news the Lakers could have anticipated. They were playing cohesive basketball consistently at the right time, so blowout or not, they could have shaken it off. In light of the latest news on Dončić, there were some justifiably strong reactions.

The Lakers’ recent hot streak vaulted them all the way up to No. 3 in the Western Conference standings, but with Dončić’s injury, there’s no way to know if it will stay that way at season’s end regardless of how few games are left.

All that remains is wondering if Dončić should come back. For further context, the Lakers star hurt this hamstring earlier in the season, so his re-injuring it is a problem, especially because it will hold him out.

Hamstring injuries aren’t as devastating as Achilles or ACL tears, but they are precarious situations in that if they don’t properly recover, they can interfere with a player’s prime. That’s not something the Lakers should take a risk on with someone like Dončić.

As much as it would be awesome to see what this team would look like at full strength, they still have plenty of time to sort out what to do with Dončić. Unless it’s clear he can play without risk of re-injury (or making it worse), they should keep him out until he is fully recovered.

The odds of the Lakers winning the title were slim, but it is a shame that during a rare time in which they had Dončić and LeBron James, the Lakers won’t get the chance to make up for their embarrassing playoff run last year.

More importantly, because Dončić alone gives them a non-zero chance at a title, it’s not worth risking that for one year.
