On Friday, Johnson made a heartfelt post to Instagram for his son.

The post had over 2,500 likes in less than two hours.

NBA legends James Worthy and Jamal Crawford were among the early likes on his post.

Johnson wrote: “Happy birthday to my son Andre! I love being your Father each day, week, month and year – you make me so proud! I’m so happy that you have found your voice and what you want to do and accomplish in the world – the podcast that you’re going to launch and your amazing book about your business, life and being a husband, father, and man of God. Always remember that your father loves you. Have an amazing birthday!”

Johnson was the first pick in the 1979 NBA Draft after leading Michigan State to the NCAA title over Larry Bird and Indiana State.

Johnson wrote (in 2024): “There’s no feeling that can compare to winning a National Championship! 🏆 It’s crazy to think that 45 years ago me and my MSU teammates won a national title. I knew we were up against a 33-0 Indiana State team led by Player of the Year Larry Bird, so I had to make sure I did my part for my team to bring home the trophy. Being awarded Most Valuable Player of the game for my 24 point/ 7 rebound / 5 assist performance and having my teammate Greg Kelser show out with a 19 point / 8 rebound/ 9 assist performance proved two stars was better than one!”

The 12-time All-Star had career averages of 19.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 11.2 assists and 1.9 steals per contest while shooting 52.0% from the field and 30.3% from three-point range in 906 games.

He also appeared in 190 NBA playoff games, averaging 12.3 assists per contest.

Via StatMuse: “Rookie Magic Johnson: — 18.0 PPG — 7.7 RPG — 7.3 APG — 2.4 SPG — Top 10 in AST and STL — All-Star — NBA Champ — Finals MVP The only rookie in NBA history to win Finals MVP.”

As for the current Lakers, they are the fifth seed in the Western Conference with a 33-21 record in 54 games.

They last won a title during the 2020 season.
