Kevon Looney’s reported deal with the New Orleans Pelicans drew some surprised reactions from NBA observers. It also got one highly enthusiastic, if short, response from former Golden State Warriors teammate Jordan Poole once the news was announced.
Jordan Poole To Be Reunited With NBA Championship Teammate
The free agency window for the NBA is officially open, leading to some surprising agreements between teams and players. One of those that qualifies is the reported deal bringing center Kevon Looney to the New Orleans Pelicans, reportedly for two years at $16 million. The move was enthusiastically welcomed by Looney’s teammate on the Warriors,
Jordan Poole, who was recently traded to the Pelicans.

Poole expressed his excitement through his Instagram Stories, where he shared ESPN’s report of the deal with the message, “OMG It’s So Lit,” with emojis denoting a smiling devil and a fleur-de-lis, which is the official symbol of Louisiana.
Looney leaves the Warriors after playing in the Bay Area for 10 years, winning three NBA titles during the height of their dynasty after being selected by the team out of UCLA with the 30th pick in the 2015 draft. Besides Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, he was the longest-tenured player on the roster.

Poole was acquired by the Pelicans from the Washington Wizards along with wing player Saddiq Bey and the 40th pick in this year’s NBA Draft, which would be used to select Micah Peavy. In return, the Wizards got veteran guard CJ McCollum, center Kelly Olynyk and a future second-round pick. Poole had averaged 20.5 points per game, leading the Wizards in scoring to go along with 3.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game in his 68 starts last season.
The Pelicans have been busy making moves ever since naming former NBA champion Joe Dumars as their Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. The former Detroit Pistons player and executive has promoted an aggressive mindset for the team.
“I’ve been around aggressive teams my entire life in this league, in this business, as a professional,” Dumars said in an interview with local network WDSU6. “We are going to be aggressive in this front office,” he continued. “We want our players to be aggressive. We want our approach to be aggressive. We want to show up.”
Looney and Poole played on the Warriors’ last championship team in 2022 before Poole was traded to Washington in a multi-player deal for point guard Chris Paul. Looney contributed off the bench this past season, averaging 4.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists, and still ranking in the top 10 of offensive rebounding percentage among those players who recorded more than 40 games.
