‘Absolute Trash,’ ‘Bum’ — Lonzo Ball, NBA World React As Nick Wright Labels LaMelo Ball a ‘Clown’ in Scathing Rant

Lonzo Ball and the NBA world fired back at Nick Wright after the analyst labeled his brother, LaMelo Ball, a "clown" for the Bam Adebayo incident.

Nick Wright wanted to make a point about LaMelo Ball. The FS1 analyst went scorched earth on Wednesday’s “First Things First,” ripping into the Charlotte Hornets guard for his controversial trip on Bam Adebayo during Tuesday night’s play-in win over the Miami Heat. Wright didn’t just criticize the play, he attacked Ball’s character.

“That young man is a clown and has been a clown forever and will never not be a clown,” Wright said, adding that Ball conducts himself “on the court and it would appear off the court” like “an immature coddled teenager.” Once his comment went viral, the response from LaMelo’s brother and the NBA world was swift.

Lonzo Ball Leads the Pushback Against Nick Wright After Viral LaMelo Ball Comments

Lonzo Ball, LaMelo’s older brother, took to social media with a series of pointed messages aimed directly at Wright. He called the analyst “a bum” and added that people “be running they mouth and never touched a rock.”

Lonzo made clear this wasn’t going to slide. “I usually let s**t slide but I’m on one today,” he posted, capping it off with a defiant “Hornets in 7.”

The reaction extended far beyond the Ball family. Many fans and observers flooded social media, questioning why networks allow analysts to lob personal attacks at players.

“One of the many reasons why sports talk is absolute trash nowadays,” one influencer wrote on X, noting that it’s “absurd” that any network allows its employees to speak about players this way.

Sleeper sarcastically asked, “Who let Nick Wright speak?”

Hoops & Hook, a basketball fan page, didn’t hold back against Wright too. “Nick Wright calling anyone a clown is like the circus tent calling the big top extra. Pot, meet kettle with the receding hairline.”

The incident that sparked Wright’s tirade occurred in the second quarter of last night’s play-in game. Ball grabbed Adebayo’s ankle as both players hit the floor, sending the Heat center crashing down hard. Adebayo left with a back injury and never returned.

Charlotte went on to win 127-126 in overtime, with Ball finishing with 30 points and 10 assists in one of the most chaotic play-in games in recent memory. Ball apologized postgame, claiming he got hit in the head and didn’t know where he was during the play.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was furious, saying Ball should have been ejected for a “dangerous play.” The NBA is reviewing the incident, though Brian Windhorst reported he doesn’t expect Ball to be suspended for Friday’s final play-in game.
