L.J. Cryer’s Net Worth and NIL Valuation: A Closer Look at the Houston Star’s Earnings Amid March Madness Run

Senior guard L.J. Cryer has led the Houston Cougars to the NCAA Championship Game. Let's examine his NIL deals and earning potential as a pro.

The Houston Cougars have been one of the best defensive teams in college basketball this season. While their hard-nosed style of play has been their calling card all year, their offense has taken a step up thanks in large part to senior guard L.J. Cryer.

The fifth-year senior from Baylor transferred to Houston in 2023 and stepped up his game offensively upon his arrival. Averaging 15.6 points per game this season, Cryer has been the offensive engine for his team, most recently dropping 26 points against Duke in their Final Four win on Saturday night.

Tonight, he has a chance to become the first player to win an NCAA championship with two different schools, having won a title with Baylor in 2021.

L.J. Cryer’s 2025 NIL Valuation

While Cryer isn’t a household name like, say, Duke Blue Devils phenom Cooper Flagg or even Florida Gators star Walter Clayton Jr., his name still carries weight and is very marketable in the NIL world.

Cryer’s stock has risen each year of his collegiate career. Upon transferring to Houston, Cryer signed an NIL deal reportedly worth $517,000. His rising fame helped him capitalize on this deal, and his strong play on both ends has only helped him increase his career earnings.

In 2025, Cryer’s NIL valuation soared to a whopping $769,000. This puts him as the top basketball earner in the state of Texas. He also ranks among the top five highest-paid collegiate athletes in the state, trailing only Arch Manning, Quinn Ewers, Kelvin Banks Jr., and Sam Hurley — all of whom are star athletes at the University of Texas.

The real financial ceiling is determinant upon Cryer’s NBA Draft stock. Currently projected as a potential second-round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Cryer has the ability to climb the ladder depending on how he plays tonight and throughout the pre-draft process. It remains to be seen if he’ll be drafted or if he’ll have to settle for a two-way contract with an NBA team, but he should do well for himself at the next level. He will also surely have overseas offers to weigh since becoming a star collegiate athlete.

Cryer already has a financial portfolio that many people his age dream about. He is the modern student-athlete in Division I sports, balancing his market value with an exceptional level of play on the game’s biggest stage. Should he and the Cougars win tonight’s championship game, Cryer could be in for an even bigger payday, scoring endorsement deals that could pad his bank account even more as he makes the jump to the pros.

His long-term net worth trajectory hinges largely on his skills translating to the professional level, whether in the NBA or overseas.
