LeBron James’ future in Los Angeles is one of the most talked-about storylines across the entire NBA heading into the offseason, and a new report from Marc Stein is adding more fuel to the fire.
Could LeBron James Join the Golden State Warriors?
According to Stein, the Golden State Warriors are routinely described by rival teams as one of the few credible destinations for James’ 24th NBA campaign if he and the Los Angeles Lakers indeed part ways after eight seasons together. “It has some legs,” one league source told Stein of the James link to Golden State.

Stein added that as recently as late January, the prevailing sentiment around the league was that James might not return to Los Angeles, particularly amid reports of tension and evolving dynamics within the organization.
For a relationship that looked rock-solid just two summers ago, the ground has shifted considerably. When James exercised his $52.6 million player option to remain in L.A. for the 2025-26 season, most assumed it was a formality.
He was still producing, the Lakers had built around him for years, and there was no real reason to think anything dramatic was coming. Then the Luka Dončić trade happened, and suddenly the franchise’s vision for its future looked very different.
Los Angeles is clearly building around Dončić and Austin Reaves, and James, at 41, has found himself in the unfamiliar position of being the third option on his own team. His numbers reflect that shift, as he is averaging 20.9 points, 5.96 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game this season, down from the elite production he posted just a year ago.
The Lakers have been playing well as a unit, sitting comfortably in the upper half of the Western Conference standings. But internal comfort and organizational direction are two different things, and multiple reports suggest the Lakers would prefer James’ contract to come off the books after this season so they can allocate that cap space toward pieces that fit better around Dončić long term.
Reaves is also heading toward a new max contract that will demand significant financial commitment from the front office.
From the Golden State’s perspective, the interest in James is not new. Stein noted that the Warriors had shown interest in acquiring James since the February 2024 trade deadline.
The connection makes sense on several levels. James has spoken warmly about Stephen Curry for years, and his friendship with Draymond Green goes back even further. Steve Kerr is someone James has openly respected throughout his career.
The appeal of pairing James with Curry for what could be one or both players’ final seasons is real, and the Warriors have already made clear they intend to be aggressive this summer after a brutal 2025-26 campaign derailed by injuries. Jimmy Butler suffered a torn ACL, ending his season, and Curry has missed significant time as well, leaving Golden State scrambling just to stay relevant in the playoff picture.
The financial piece is where things get complicated. Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard reported that the Golden State could realistically offer James around $15 million, which would require him to take a massive discount from his current salary.
Cleveland is the other name that keeps coming up. The Cleveland Cavaliers have been mentioned by multiple insiders as a possible landing spot for James’ final chapter, with the idea of him returning to Ohio carrying obvious emotional weight.
What makes the Warriors’ angle interesting is the urgency behind it. Golden State missed on Kawhi Leonard at the trade deadline, came up empty on other big names, and is staring at a summer where the Curry window is beginning to close for real.
Adding James, even on a discounted deal, would instantly transform the franchise’s outlook for 2026-27. Whether James is willing to make that kind of move remains the biggest question of the entire offseason. But according to at least one league source, the connection to Golden State is no longer just noise.
