LeBron James, the undisputed king of the NBA, was involved in a heated altercation with renowned ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith during the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the New York Knicks on March 6. Just as he dominated on the court with a 40-point performance, James was fired up off it, confronting the 57-year-old analyst.
The altercation quickly went viral, sparking reactions and speculation from the broader basketball community. However, just as fast as the incident escalated, it simmered down—Smith later clarified his stance on ESPN’s First Take, and things now appear to have settled between him and James.
DeMarcus Cousins Calls Out the Media’s Double Standard
Following the James-Smith confrontation, former NBA player DeMarcus Cousins reflected on his own experiences with the media. Cousins recalled being negatively labeled and facing disciplinary action when he confronted a reporter over comments about his family. He pointed out a double standard in how such situations are perceived and handled, expressing a desire for fair treatment.
Cousins took to X to share his thoughts on the matter:
“It’s cool when they do it, it’s a problem when I do it…🤔 I was called a villain, bully, thug when I confronted a reporter for speaking on my family. Got suspended, fined, and eventually traded. I look forward to getting my lick back! 😌”

The veteran center was referring to his infamous 2016 confrontation with Sacramento Bee columnist Andy Furillo. The four-time NBA All-Star was fined $50,000 after a heated altercation over an article Furillo wrote, which criticized Cousins and even mentioned his brother, Jaleel.
Unhappy with the piece, Cousins confronted Furillo with some harsh words:
“We’re going to have some real f****** issues,” he said. “Don’t ever mention my brother again.”
What Led to the James-Smith Confrontation?
LeBron’s frustration stemmed from Smith’s repeated criticism of his eldest son, Bronny James. After Bronny was drafted by the Lakers and later assigned to their G-League affiliate, Smith expressed strong opinions about the move. His public criticisms of Bronny culminated in the courtside clash with LeBron.
Smith later addressed the situation, acknowledging LeBron’s frustration but also defending his role as a journalist:
“I really understood where he was coming from,” Smith said. “He was very, very upset. I could tell. But he could’ve called me. I’d have come to see him. I’d have had a conversation with him. He could’ve been just as upset face-to-face, man-to-man, as opposed to being courtside at the game.”
“I had no idea that everybody saw it until I woke up this morning, but it is what it is. Like I said, as a father, I get it. I’m not offended. I’m not insulted. I don’t have any animosity or animus toward LeBron James for this, nothing like that.”
While Cousins faced severe backlash for his actions in 2016, LeBron received significant support from fans for confronting Smith. Many felt that when it came to family, some lines should not be crossed. However, Smith maintained that as an analyst, it is his responsibility to report things as they are, even if they upset players.
