LeBron James’ Net Worth and Career Earnings: Is the Lakers Legend a Billionaire Entering 2026 NBA Free Agency?

As NBA legend LeBron James enters free agency, let's at his past contracts could give a look into his next one.

For over two decades, LeBron James has been a cornerstone not just of his teams but of the NBA itself. From a cover article in Sports Illustrated as a high school senior to various commercials, the basketball world saw his rise and popularity rise.

With four MVP awards, four titles, and 22 All-Star game appearances, James will play his 24th NBA season this fall. He last left the court on May 11. The Oklahoma City Thunder won 115-110, sweeping the Lakers out of the NBA playoffs. With that home loss, James’ future in Los Angeles fell into doubt. While there’s no question about playing next year, the question of where James will play will become a hot topic.

A Look at LeBron James’ Wealth

Well into his 40s, James not only continues to score points at a historic rate, but his career earnings also continue to rise. Last season, the Lakers paid him $52,627,153, which was the final year of a two-year, $101,355,998 contract that he inked in 2024. On top of being the NBA’s all-time leader in multiple categories, including points, he’s also earned $581,375,548, according to Spotrac.

Plus, James’ endorsement deals and investments more than equaled his NBA career earnings. Forbes lists him as the 2,715th-richest person in the world, with a net worth of $1.4 billion. From starting his own media company to investing in the popular Beats by Dre headphones, the forward increased his portfolio.

With that type of financial cushion, theoretically, James does not play for the paycheck. However, that does not mean that he will offer a discount to the Lakers or any other team. Looking at his contract history, James’ paycheck evolves with the league pay structure. As a rookie, he took home $4,018,290. Last season, he made 13 times that amount, just on the court.

Last year, the Lakers finished 53-29, fourth in the Western Conference. The Lakers sent the Houston Rockets packing in the first round. After losing to OKC, the team looks to free agency to strengthen key areas. First, they re-signed guard Austin Reaves to a four-year, $185 million contract. That solidifies the Los Angeles backcourt.

As per recent developments, James has informed the Lakers that he wouldn’t be returning to Los Angeles this year. This comes at a time when his move to the Miami Heat/Golden State Warriors is heavily speculated.
