Is LeBron James Retiring After This Season? Latest on the Lakers Superstar’s NBA Future

With the NBA 2025-26 season heating up, fans continue to debate over LeBron James' impending retirement.

If there’s one player who’s been lauded for his longevity and consistent performance, it’s LeBron James. The Los Angeles Lakers star has been at the peak of his game for most of his career, entering his 23rd campaign this season.

However, with his sciatica and arthritis trouble, James has sparked multiple retirement rumors. James, of course, remains focused on winning his fifth career title.

Is LeBron James Retiring Soon? A Look at the Lakers Star’s NBA Future

Despite his efforts, this season hasn’t been the same for James.

The 40-year-old missed the start of the season with injuries, taking time to get used to the court when he returned. And while fans want to see James win another title with the Lakers, many couldn’t help but wonder if it’s his final season.

James, however, has yet to provide fans with a conclusive answer.

In a recent interview discussing Christmas games and the NBA during the holidays, fans couldn’t help but notice James’ tempered spirit. The 21-time All-Star wanted to focus on his family, leaving many to assume this could be his last NBA campaign.

“I’d much rather be at home with my family. But I mean, it’s the game, it’s the game that I love. It’s a game I watched when I was a kid on Christmas Day, watching a lot of the greatest play the game on Christmas,” he said before his 20th Christmas game.

James added that it was an honor to play irrespective of what happened.

“Obviously, I’m gonna be completely honest, I would like to be home on the couch with my family all throughout the day,” James explained. “But our number is called, so we have to go out and perform, and I look forward to it.”

Fans pointed out that James looked ready to hang up his jersey, simply hoping for another title before he finally does so.

James isn’t Waiting on Son Bryce’s NBA Journey to Begin

Before James’ eldest son, Bronny, joined the NBA, multiple reports stated that the Akron native was waiting to play with his son.

And while Bronny is still finding his footing, the two became the first father-son duo to play in the NBA. Naturally, many extended the same courtesy to James’ younger son Bryce, believing that he would wait for the latter to start in the league.

In an interview, James clarified that both of them are currently working on different timelines.

“He’s his own young man now. He’s down in Tucson. We’ll see what happens this year, next year. He has his own timeline, I’ve got my timeline, and I don’t know if they quite match up. We’ll see,” James explained.

Speaking of his age, James added that though it’s just a number, it is also a reality. The four-time NBA Champion is aware of his own strengths and determined not to take his talent and career for granted.

That being said, one must consider factors such as James’ health, which is already burdened by issues like sciatica. Although James has managed to bounce back every season, the 2025-26 season may be his last, especially if the Lakers win another championship.
