NBA Execs Say LeBron James Could Follow Mavs Legend Dirk Nowitzki’s Footsteps With Lakers Future in Doubt

According to NBA executives, LeBron James could use Dirk Nowitzki's method to continue playing for the Lakers.

The Los Angeles Lakers have run into an inevitable problem: LeBron James’ age and declining performance. While the NBA superstar’s impact and influence on the team are undeniable, one can’t deny the demerits of building a team around him at this stage.

This also factors in Luka DonÄŤić — who is viewed as the new cornerstone of the Lakers. Of course, NBA executives and analysts have varying views on James’ future, one of which includes following Dirk Nowitzki’s footsteps in the later stages of his career.

NBA Executive Speaks on LeBron James’ Possible Future Dirk Nowitzki-Esque Move With the LA Lakers

In his recent report, NBA insider Brian Windhorst placed the highlight on James’ next decision with the Lakers. While the team is currently trying to function as a unit, the 41-year-old NBA star is expected to make his decision soon.

Having said that, there’s no stopping the retirement rumors, which have only intensified over time. As per Windhorst, NBA executives believe James has a few options. One of them includes following in Dallas Mavericks legend Nowitzki’s footsteps.

Nowitzki — in an attempt to stay with the Mavericks — accepted reduced pay to help build the roster.

“Stay with the Lakers at a significantly reduced salary. (This would be “the Dirk option,” as one executive said, referencing Dirk Nowitzki’s large pay cuts in his later years to stay with the Dallas Mavericks and help them help build out the roster),” the executives told ESPN.

The other obvious options would be leaving the Lakers via free agency or retiring soon after the 2025-26 season. Some still believe James — averaging over 20 points per game — can be the key to bringing another championship home.

That being said, James accepting reduced pay might not be a viable option. The four-time NBA champion is already over 40 and might prioritize retiring over playing more. James is currently signed to a two-year, $101,355,998 contract with the Lakers.

Rob Pelinka Hopes for James To Retire With the Lakers

Despite the fatigue that has set in after 23 seasons, James might play another season before retiring. Rob Pelinka — the Lakers’ president of basketball operations and general manager — wants the icon to retire in LA.

“We would love if LeBron’s story would be to retire as a Laker,” Pelinka said. “The first thing we want to do in terms of LeBron and his future is just give him absolute respect to choose his story with his family in terms of how many years he’s going to continue to play.”

The problem can also lie with James and DonÄŤić, who have a total of 15 years between them. James is nearing the end of his illustrious career, while DonÄŤić — although capable — is just getting started.

Having missed the start of the 2025-26 season, James is currently averaging 20.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 6.5 assists, while shooting 50.8% from the field. The Lakers, on their end, are currently ranked fifth in the league with a 21-11 win-loss record.
