LaMelo Ball Sets the Record Straight on Controversial Play That Injured Bam Adebayo in Heat-Hornets Play-In Game

LaMelo Ball explains his point of view on his divisive trip against Bam Adebayo in the Hornets' critical play-in win over the Heat.

LaMelo Ball drew backlash for a controversial play against Bam Adebayo early in the Charlotte Hornets’ 127-126 overtime home Eastern Conference play-in win over the Miami Heat on Tuesday.

While Ball appeared to intentionally trip Adebayo, resulting in the three-time All-Star sustaining a lower back injury, the Hornets standout sought to set the record straight postgame.

LaMelo Ball Says He Was ‘Just Playing Basketball’ on Divisive Trip Against Bam Adebayo

Ball proved to be the hero for Charlotte, overcoming a brutal shooting night to win the game on a driving layup with 4.7 seconds remaining in overtime. However, the 24-year-old playmaker still had to answer for a second-quarter collision with Adebayo that left many frustrated, including Heat coach Erik Spoelstra.

After getting blocked inside by Miami forward Simone Fontecchio, Ball tumbled to the floor. As he hit the court, the one-time All-Star grabbed Adebayo’s left ankle, causing the big man to take a hard spill out of bounds on the baseline.

The play was overlooked by officials. With Adebayo down, the Heat carried out a fast break, and the teams exchanged baskets before Miami called a timeout with 10:58 remaining in the second quarter.

While Adebayo was initially listed as questionable to return, he was ultimately ruled out for the remainder of the Heat’s final outing as the 10th-placed team’s loss eliminated it from playoff contention.

Adebayo finished with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal on 3-for-3 shooting (100%) across 11 minutes. Conversely, Ball finished with a game-high 30 points, 5 rebounds, and 10 assists despite shooting just 12-for-31 overall (38.7%).

Speaking on the incident postgame, Ball reasoned that he was disoriented on the play and meant no ill will toward Adebayo.

“I apologize on that one. I got hit in the head, didn’t really know where I was, but I’mma check on him and see if he’s okay and everything,” Ball said, adding that he was “just playing basketball.”

Ball’s explanation likely won’t do anything to ease Spoelstra’s dismay, though, as the veteran coach called for the NBA to “penalize” him during a lengthy postgame rant.

“I don’t think it’s cute. I don’t think it’s funny,” Spoelstra said. “I think it’s a stupid play. It’s a dangerous play. … He should be penalized for that. I don’t think that belongs in the game, tripping guys and shenanigans. … Somebody has got to see that. He should have been thrown out of the game for that.”

It remains to be seen if the league will discipline Ball ahead of the Hornets’ next do-or-die play-in matchup. They will face the loser of Wednesday’s play-in showdown between the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic on Friday night for a chance to secure the East’s eighth seed.

A playoff berth would mark Ball’s first, as Charlotte last made it to the playoffs in 2016.
