It has been a full year since Luka Dončić and LeBron James became teammates. Last season, the Dallas Mavericks made a stunning move when former general manager Nico Harrison traded Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis.
While the trade was controversial, Dončić appears to have adjusted to his new home, even while sharing the leadership role with James. With the spotlight no longer solely on Dončić, the Slovenian star spoke candidly about sharing the court with James.
Luka Dončić is Happy to be Playing with LeBron James
Dončić is now in his second season with James alongside him. While many questioned whether the pairing would succeed, the duo has performed well this year.
Despite significant concerns about the Lakers’ lack of defense, Dončić and James have managed to keep Los Angeles among the top teams in the Western Conference throughout the season.
In a recent episode of “Cousins with Vince Carter & Tracy McGrady,” Dončić expressed his feelings on playing next to James. He acknowledged the challenges they initially faced and the adjustments both stars had to make.
“Just being like part of his journey, you know, it’s been amazing,” Dončić said. “I came into the league like watching him play. My first game against him, like it was like a dream come true. Now, just being his teammate, it’s insane.”
“When he was injured in the beginning (of the 2025-26 season), after he came back, the first couple of games weren’t that good. But now, since we’ve played for a long time together, it’s getting better and better.”

While it is encouraging to see two generations of superstars working together as a cohesive unit, uncertainty remains about how long the partnership will last.
There have been multiple rumors about James potentially leaving Los Angeles after this season. Some speculate he could retire, while others believe he might return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
