Lakers Legend LeBron James Overheard Saying That His Wife Savannah Wants Him To ‘Retire in the Next Year or So’

Lakers star LeBron James's retirement speculation heats up after a surprising video involving LeBron's wife Savannah surfaces.

After the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the 2024-25 NBA Playoffs in just five games by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the buzz surrounding LeBron James’s retirement intensified.

During the Lakers’ exit interview, James remained noncommittal, stating that he hadn’t made any decisions yet and would need to have conversations with his family regarding this matter.

“I don’t know. I don’t have an answer to that,” James said. “Something I’ll sit down with my family, my wife, and my support group, and kind of just talk through it and see what happens. And just have a conversation with myself on how long I want to continue to play. I don’t know the answer to that right now, to be honest. So we’ll see.”

But now, one of those family conversations may have just gone public, and fans everywhere are talking.

LeBron James’s Wife Might Have Given Him a Timeframe to Retire

According to a recent report from ESPN’s NBA Insider Shams Charania, a casual dinner in New York City may have revealed more than intended.

James, his wife Savannah, Miami Heat forward Kevin Love, and Love’s wife Kate were seen enjoying an evening out in the Big Apple.

In a video posted by one of the guests at the dinner, a background snippet caught James mentioning something that’s now fueling the latest retirement chatter.

“[Savannah] wants me to f***ing retire in the next year or so,” James was heard saying, per Charania’s report.

Interestingly, this revelation arrives just as another key piece of news came to light. Rich Paul, who is the CEO of Klutch Sports and James’s longtime agent, recently confirmed that James will exercise his $52.6 million player option. This guarantees that James will suit up for his record-breaking 23rd NBA season, which is the most by any player in league history.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul said. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Lakers governor Buss] and Rob [Lakers general manager Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future,” Paul said per the ESPN report. “We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive, and want what’s best for him.”

The 2024-25 season was a historic one to James. He not only averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game at 40, but he also became the first player in NBA history to pass 50,000 total career points.

Perhaps even more monumental is that LeBron made league history with his son Bronny James, who was selected 55th overall by the Lakers in the 2024 NBA Draft. The father-son duo became the first to ever play together in the NBA.

While retirement won’t be happening this season, and fans can still expect to see “King James” dominate in Year 23, all eyes will be on what happens next.
