LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, brought the NBA world to the edge of its seat during the Los Angeles Lakers–Brooklyn Nets game, which also marked a rare, historic feat. A special moment unfolded when the elder James assisted his son, who then knocked down a 3-pointer, the first time a father-son duo had combined for such a play.
How the NBA World Reacted to LeBron James and Bronny James’ Father-Son Connection
There was nothing left for James to achieve after Olympic gold medals, NBA titles, and multiple MVP honors, except to spend some time playing with his son. The Lakers made that happen by selecting Bronny in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, and although his rookie year was not one for the books, he created a couple of special moments with his father.
In his second year, he was active on the roster and played in a limited role, averaging 2.1 points, 0.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists. But at the Lakers-Nets game on March 27, a defining moment caught everyone’s attention as the 41-year-old all-time leading scorer dished out an assist to his son, who then scored a 3-pointer. It was the first time a father-son duo created a moment like that in NBA history.
The NBA world couldn’t help but hail the James duo, calling the moment cinematic. Analyst page Buddy Boy Bets, @Buddyboybets, noted that it was yet another record the James family achieved, hardly a surprise.
“ABSOLUTE CINEMA. LEBRON TO BRONNY FOR THREE…HISTORY MADE: First father-son assist on a three-pointer in NBA history. The James family continues to rewrite the record books.”
Bleacher Report, @BleacherReport, lauded the historic moment mid-game, saying:
“LEBRON ASSIST TO BRONNY. FIRST FATHER-AND-SON ASSIST IN NBA HISTORY.”
SM Highlight, @SMHighlights1, celebrated the news along the same lines, captioning:
“LeBron James with the assist to his son, Bronny James for three. Atta boy!!”
LakeShowYo, @LakeShowYo, joined in, noting:
“LeBron & Bronny make NBA HISTORY First ever father-to-son assist.”
The elder James scored 14 points alongside 8 assists, while the main man, Luka Dončić, who produced 41 points in just 39 minutes of action, shot 15-25 from the field and went a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.
Dončić was listed as “questionable,” but his clearance was a relief to the Lakers. However, he received his 16th technical foul after an altercation with Brooklyn’s Ziaire Williams and will miss the Lakers’ next matchup with the Washington Wizards, 13th in the Eastern Conference and coming off a loss to the Golden State Warriors.
