King James, who missed the Lakers’ first 14 games of the 2025–26 season because of sciatic nerve irritation, returned to action on Nov. 19 and scored 11 points in his debut.
His absence had raised concerns about how his body would respond in Year 23 and whether the 40-year-old could still perform at an elite level.
Those questions didn’t last long.
In just his second game this season, James put all the doubts to rest. Early in the game, he received a pass near the paint, sprinted down the court, outmaneuvered Keyonte George, and finished the sequence with a powerful fast-break dunk.

It was his first dunk of Year 23 and a moment that left the Utah crowd erupting in amazement.
The sight of a 40-year-old NBA player firing like that, especially after dealing with sciatic nerve pain, stunned fans across social media and in the arena.
It also served as another reminder that the league’s leading scorer still possesses physical tools rarely seen even among much younger players.
James Had a Strong Start for the Lakers
James made history this month by becoming the first player in NBA history to reach 23 seasons, surpassing Vince Carter’s previous record.
He picked up right where he left off before the injury, finishing the first half with 10 points, four rebounds, and six assists.
The Lakers entered the night with an 11–4 record, sitting third in the Western Conference. A win against Utah would move them to 12–4 and into the second seed.
Their strong start continues to shape the early-season storylines, especially with James back in the lineup and finding his rhythm.
James opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025–26 season, surprising many who believed last season might have been his final year.
But his play suggests he still has more to offer, and the Lakers’ coaching staff, led by JJ Redick, has made it a priority to keep him engaged.
Redick discussed this before James’ season debut, explaining, “One of the big takeaways from our conversations was just continuing to find ways to challenge him. His brain needs a new challenge.”
