What Happened to Kyrie Irving? A Look at the Mavericks Star’s Injury and When He’ll Return

With the 2025-26 NBA season heating up, here’s a look at Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving’s status and return timeline.

When Luka Dončić was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks fans turned to Kyrie Irving for hope. With a championship to his name, Irving was viewed as an ideal candidate to lead a retooled roster into the 2025-26 season.

However, with Irving unavailable and the roster depleted, the Mavericks are struggling to find momentum. While fans remain optimistic about rookie Cooper Flagg, many continue to hope for Irving’s speedy return.

Kyrie Irving Injury Update: When Will the Dallas Mavericks Star Return?

As mentioned, this has been a tumultuous year for the Mavericks.

While the changes began with Dončić’s trade, Irving further concerned fans after suffering an ACL tear in March. He injured himself during a game against the Sacramento Kings and waited several weeks before undergoing surgery.

Naturally, multiple rumors surfaced surrounding Irving, with some highlighting uncertainty about the Mavericks’ recovery timelines. However, with the team’s disastrous start to the new season, fans are relieved Irving will have additional time to rest before the playoffs.

Earlier this month, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd discussed Irving’s return timeline, providing some clarity on his recovery. According to Kidd, the team still does not have a fixed schedule.

“There’s no schedule still. He’s just still doing the things he’s supposed to,” Kidd told the media. “His spirits, he’s in a good place. He’s rehabbing… That’s the only update I can really give you, that he’s in a good place and he’s doing everything he’s supposed to.”

Reports have continued to speculate about a potential return date, with many believing Irving could come back around the All-Star break. The Mavericks’ season outlook will also play a role in that decision.

The team’s slim playoff hopes could delay Irving’s return, allowing the veteran additional time to recover and reacclimate. It is also worth noting that the intensity leading into and during the playoffs is significantly higher, making it more difficult for players to regain form after injury.

Rookie Cooper Flagg Is Impressed With Irving’s Presence

While recovering from his ACL injury, Irving has remained engaged with his teammates.

In a interview last week, Flagg spoke about Irving’s impact on the team, offering praise for the veteran.

“Kai is an incredible human being,” Flagg said (per The Dallas Morning News’ Mike Curtis). “He’s looked out for us this whole year & for me, ever since I got here. He’s just been a really good vet for me. He’s just a kind-hearted person. That’s a really cool gift & really cool thing to do, and it’s gonna be a lot of fun.”

Although Flagg has already been impressed by Irving off the court, it remains to be seen how their chemistry develops once they share the floor.
