What Made Kon Knueppel’s Summer League MVP Performance So Special?

Following the championship celebration, Knueppel showed reporters his dazzling Summer League championship ring. Despite claiming MVP honors, Knueppel’s first instinct was praising teammate KJ Simpson, showing the maturity that caught Charlotte’s attention during the draft process.

“Winning is always better than losing,” Knueppel said. “I probably didn’t deserve it (MVP Award) if it was an all week award. KJ was our best player all week. So, props to him, man. He makes me look good.”

The championship game against Sacramento showcased exactly why Knueppel earned those MVP honors. While Simpson contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and a block, Knueppel took over when it mattered most. He scored 21 points with five rebounds and two assists. He banked four shots from behind the arc in 11 attempts.

Both Sacramento and Charlotte entered the final with perfect records, setting up a clash between two undefeated squads. However, Knueppel’s clutch performance proved to be the difference maker as Charlotte claimed the title without a single loss throughout the tournament.

The MVP’s praise for Simpson wasn’t just politeness. The second-year guard, selected 42nd in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft, truly was Charlotte’s most consistent performer before the finals. Playing on a two-way contract, Simpson demonstrated throughout the week why the Hornets believe in his development.

Knueppel’s assessment proved accurate. After struggling to find his rhythm early in the tournament, the rookie improved with each game, building toward his championship-clinching performance. That steady progression showed exactly the kind of growth Charlotte hoped to see from their lottery pick.

With both guards making strong impressions during Summer League play, the Hornets are dreaming about finding the perfect complementary pieces to their superstar LaMelo Ball. The question now becomes how these two young talents fit alongside Charlotte’s established floor general.

What Does Knueppel’s Relationship With LaMelo Ball Mean for Charlotte?

The rookie’s admiration for Ball became clear in a recent interview with Taylor Rooke for Bleacher Report. Knueppel called Ball a super-talented player who could easily create shots for himself off the dribble, showing he understands what makes Charlotte’s star special.

“I’ve always admired his passing, especially the creativity he passes with, and he seems like he’s a step ahead of the defense,” Knueppel said. The rookie is eagerly awaiting his chance to share the court with the All-Star guard.

“So just being able to space the floor for him, get open, give him some space to create, but also be a guy that he can trust getting the ball to, and also a guy that’s going to be looking for him all the time,” he added.

The fit makes sense on paper. While critics question Knueppel’s athleticism, he has compensated with efficient scoring and smart playmaking throughout his career from high school to college. With Ball handling primary ball-handling duties, Knueppel’s athletic limitations become less concerning if Charlotte deploys them together in the backcourt.

This pairing takes on extra significance considering Charlotte’s recent struggles. The Hornets endured a brutal 2024-25 campaign, finishing with just 19 wins in 82 games. However, the strong performances from both rookies and second-year players during Summer League suggest the organization’s future might be brighter than that record indicates.

The championship ring on Knueppel’s finger represents more than just a Summer League title. For a franchise desperate to build around Ball’s unique talents, it might signal the beginning of something much bigger in Charlotte.
