Victor Wembanyama’s first NBA playoff run has already hit a major speed bump.
The San Antonio Spurs superstar big man suffered a frightening head injury early in Tuesday’s Game 2 first-round Western Conference home clash against the Portland Trail Blazers, leaving the NBA world holding its breath.
Victor Wembanyama Enters NBA Concussion Protocol After Gut-Wrenching Fall
After dominating in Sunday’s 111-98 Game 1 home victory with a historic 35-point postseason debut, Wembanyama appeared poised to build off his momentum at Frost Bank Center on Tuesday. However, the two-time All-Star’s night was cut short by a hard fall with Portland ahead 34-32 with 8:57 remaining in the second quarter.
Wembanyama attempted to spin on veteran Trail Blazers guard Jrue Holiday in the paint when he lost his balance and fell face-first into the hardwood. The 22-year-old grimaced in pain before sitting up and trying to collect himself, appearing dazed before making his way to the locker room.

Given the nature of the injury, as many expected, ESPN’s Shams Charania promptly reported that Wembanyama “has entered concussion protocol and is out for the remainder of Game 2.” He finished with 5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block, shooting 1-for-3 (33.3%) across 12 minutes.

Meanwhile, Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor and FS1’s Nick Wright provided estimated timelines for the French phenom’s return.
“Victor Wembanyama’s fall sure looked like a concussion. Knocked out cold after his chin hit the ground. The average NBA recovery time for a concussion is 7-10 days. 7 days would be Game 5. 10 days would be Game 7,” O’Connor speculated.

“The Wemby potential concussion (and the fact that in the NBA a concussion typically means a player is out ~8 days) has all of a sudden made OKC -200 to win the West and for the first time all year, a minus money favorite to win the title at -115,” Wright pointed out.

While the Spurs still boast a formidable unit sans Wembanyama, spearheaded by their star backcourt of De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, losing their 7-foot-4 interior presence marks a brutal blow.
With reserve center Luke Kornet stepping into an expanded role, the Trail Blazers should have a much easier time scoring inside, potentially for the next few contests.
UPDATE: Per Charania, Wembanyama “has been diagnosed with a concussion and will have further testing on Wednesday.”
