The former Golden State Warriors star certainly could have used some support following a performance he’d likely prefer to forget. In the game, he scored just ten points on 13 shots and added two rebounds, one assist, and only one three-pointer on five attempts.
Thompson struggled to find his usual efficiency, often taking forced shots and driving to the paint, which is not his strength. The Mavericks need him to be a floor-stretcher and a high-volume shooter. While it may be unrealistic to expect him to be the same elite 3-and-D player from his prime, Dallas will still need more from him to fulfill its postseason aspirations this season.

Despite the lopsided loss and subpar performance, the four-time NBA champion found a silver lining in his teammate’s play. He offered high praise for P.J. Washington’s strong showing and officially started the campaign for him to become a first-time All-Star.
“I think P.J. has All-Star potential, I really do,” Thompson said after the game. “I really believe P.J. can be one of the better two-way players in the NBA. There’s not many players who can do what P.J. does as far as guarding 1 through 5, scoring from the outside, scoring on the interior, rebounding on both ends of the floor. Very excited for him, I think he has another level to get to.”
Washington was a bright spot for Dallas, finishing with 17 points and five rebounds on efficient 7-of-11 shooting. He also found some success defensively against Harrison Barnes and Keldon Johnson. Still, his efforts weren’t nearly enough to overcome the Spurs’ dominant force.
With Victor Wembanyama putting up a staggering 40 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks, there was very little anyone on the Mavericks could do to slow him down. However, as Washington continues to show flashes of elite defense and an improved offensive repertoire, it is clear that his new star teammate already has plenty of faith in his potential.
