Kevin Durant Urges Seattle To Bring Back Iconic Championship-Winning SuperSonics Jersey

Kevin Durant backs classic green SuperSonics jersey as NBA expansion brings Seattle closer to revival and return.

Kevin Durant has shared his thoughts on what the Seattle SuperSonics should wear if the team returns to the NBA. As the league moves closer to expansion, Durant pointed to a classic look from the SuperSonics team’s championship era.

Kevin Durant Calls for Green Throwback Jerseys As Seattle SuperSonics Move Closer to NBA Return

Sports and entertainment journalist Landon Buford shared Durant’s comments on X, where the NBA star was asked how he would redesign the Seattle SuperSonics jerseys.

Durant said, “I would go to with the green throwback joints when they won the title with the Green Sonic over front.”

The statement clearly points to the team’s 1979 championship season, when the SuperSonics won their first and only NBA title. The classic green jerseys from that era remain one of the most recognized looks in franchise history.

Durant’s words come at an important time for Seattle basketball fans. The NBA is now taking major steps toward expansion. On Wednesday, the league’s board of governors unanimously approved a vote that allows the NBA to begin accepting bids for two new teams.

One team is expected to be in Seattle, while the other is planned for Las Vegas. Reports say each new franchise could cost between $7 billion and $10 billion. The target timeline for both teams to begin play is the 2028–29 season.

Seattle is seen as a strong candidate because it already has an NBA-ready arena in Climate Pledge Arena. The city also has a long history with the league and a fan base that has been waiting for a team to return since 2008.

The SuperSonics originally joined the NBA in 1967 as an expansion team. The name came from Seattle’s connection to the aviation company Boeing, which was working on a supersonic aircraft at the time.

In 2006, the franchise was sold by Howard Schultz to a group led by Clay Bennett. In 2008, the team moved to Oklahoma City and became the Oklahoma City Thunder, leaving Seattle without an NBA team.

Durant has a direct connection to that history. He was drafted second overall in 2007 and played his rookie season with the SuperSonics before the team relocated. He went on to win Rookie of the Year that season.

If the NBA returns to Seattle, the new team is expected to take back the SuperSonics name and history. This makes Durant’s jersey suggestion even more meaningful, as it ties the future team to its championship past.

With expansion plans moving forward and voices like Durant supporting the team’s identity, the return of the SuperSonics now feels closer than ever.
