Kevin Durant Makes Feelings Clear on Rockets Future Ahead of Vital Contract Decision

Kevin Durant’s arrival in Houston has turned the Rockets into instant contenders. At media day, KD addressed his future, offering clarity on what comes next.

Kevin Durant’s arrival has shifted the Houston Rockets from promising upstart to immediate contender. As training camp opens, the franchise faces cap questions, roster recalibration after Fred VanVleet’s injury, and the pressure that follows a blockbuster trade.

What matters most now is clarity, not just on the floor but also at the negotiating table as Durant begins his first season in Houston.

Will Kevin Durant Be Willing To Stay In Houston In The Future?

KD wasted little to no time addressing this question on Monday afternoon. The question hanging over everyone’s head regarding his contract extension only had one straight answer from him.

“I do see myself signing a contract extension,” Durant said at Rockets media day on Monday. “I can’t tell you exactly when it’ll happen. But I do see it happening.”

The 15-time All-Star is under contract through 2025–26 and would be eligible for a two-year extension worth $120 million. While GM Rafael Stone declined to handicap the timeline, Durant’s public stance removes much of the uncertainty that can shadow an all-in contender.

It also signals buy-in to Ime Udoka’s program and the team’s young core.

Durant chose Houston for basketball reasons as much as anything. For the rapid ascent under Udoka, the presence of ascending frontcourt hub Alperen Şengün, and a two-way wing rotation headlined by Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason.

“Just seeing the quick progression of this franchise, from where it was right after that Chris Paul-James Harden era to seeing what (Rockets coach) Ime (Udoka) got here and how he turned it around so fast,” Durant said. “It just felt organic and natural coming into the gym and being a Houston Rocket for the first time.”

What Does Being In Houston Mean For Kevin Durant?

The Rockets paid real capital to land Durant. They traded Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and the No. 10 pick in the 2025 draft in June to secure Durant’s shot-making and late-game control.

Stone framed the move as an opportunity, not a reaction. “There’s just not many people in the history of the NBA who have the capacity to do what Kevin’s done throughout his career,” Stone said. “It became an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.”

On the floor, Durant’s profile fits Houston’s biggest playoff need. He has efficient half-court creation against set defenses. Even amid turbulence in Phoenix last year, he posted All-NBA production with 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists on 52.7% from the field and 43% from three. These numbers travel beyond all systems.

Udoka can easily tap Durant as a primary finisher and situational facilitator, especially with VanVleet sidelined by an ACL tear. Fans can expect more committed ballhandling from Amen Thompson and rookie Reed Sheppard, but Durant underscored a collective approach.

“Playmaking is a team thing. As many plays we make for each other throughout the game, the better,” Durant said. “Sometimes, you don’t always get the assist for it. Sometimes, you don’t even touch the ball, and you’re creating a play for your teammates. If we play together, if we play off each other and move our bodies, we all can showcase our playmaking talents.”

Defensively, Houston can roll out solid lineups featuring Durant, Smith and Eason that can switch, trap and disrupt passing lanes, a hallmark of his defensive schemes. It will most definitely look like an Udoka staple.

Durant’s length and off-ball awareness should elevate a unit that became the Rockets’ identity in their 52-win campaign.
