Kevin Durant managed to generate a lot of attention with his most recent comments on what it takes to win NBA championships. The Houston Rockets star is viewed by many as one of the best scorers in the history of the league. Durant has found success at the highest level, winning two NBA titles and Finals MVPs with the Golden State Warriors.
Although Durant has not seen much postseason success for the past half-decade, he is one of the most talented and experienced stars in the league. Thus, it was no real surprise to hear that the NBA veteran is a part of Starting 5, an ongoing Netflix television series.
Not only did fans have the opportunity to witness Durant’s performances last season with the Suns, but they were also given access to his thoughts and opinions. Upon hearing his recent claim that a talented offense is essential to winning titles, the basketball community took to social media in an attempt to share their thoughts.
Fans Attack Kevin Durant for His Take on Winning NBA Championships
Out of all the superstars in the modern era of basketball, Durant’s legacy is considered the most controversial because he joined a championship-caliber team to get over the hump and win two rings.
While he seemed unstoppable when playing alongside Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and the Warriors, Durant has barely seen any postseason success since leaving the team. After hearing him claim that “anyone” can shuffle their feet to contest a shot, fans were quick to criticize him, “if this was true kd would have won a lot of championships outside of GS.”

Some recalled that Durant has never been acknowledged for his defensive abilities and pointed out the same, “Makes sense why he would say this.”

Fans also reminded Durant that the OKC Thunder, a team he played with for the majority of his career, finally managed to win an NBA championship last season due to their elite defensive tenacity, “Ngga watched okc win the chip and still hasn’t learned lol.”

A few tried to present a more balanced opinion by highlighting that offense and defense play equal roles when it comes to winning titles: “Winning wins championships. You need both offense and defense, and a whole lot more.”

“Defense wins championships” is an old notion associated with all championship-winning teams. Even when Durant was on the Warriors, they relied heavily on defense-oriented players such as Draymond Green to contain the opposition.
Even the most talented scorers will struggle to win unless they are able to stop the opposition from getting easy and uncontested shots. At the same time, it is arguably easier to be a “nobody” clamping up an NBA superstar than to be the star who dominates offensively on a nightly basis.
In any case, Durant’s unwillingness to understand the importance of defense might become a problem. After all, the Rockets finished last season with the second-best record in the West due to their impressive defense. Fans are left wondering if Durant’s emphasis on offense will aid or hamper the Rockets’ growth this season.
