Kevin Durant Backs Luka Dončić, Anthony Edwards As Most Likely To Catch His NBA Career Scoring Mark

Kevin Durant names Luka Dončić and Anthony Edwards as future threats to his scoring mark after his historic climb up the NBA list.

Kevin Durant is 37 years old. He is still putting up 25.7 points per game this season.

Most players who came into the league around the same time as Durant have either moved into a bench role or hung up their boots entirely. Yet here he is, still doing it at an elite level.

Despite everything he has achieved, Durant is not sitting back and talking about how great he is. Instead, he is pointing at the next generation and saying they will get there too.

Kevin Durant’s Scoring Prediction for Luka Dončić and Anthony Edwards

During a recent episode of the “Boardroom” podcast, Durant spoke about the future of scoring in the league. In his view, it’s not really a question of “if” but more about “when” someone like Luka Dončić or Anthony Edwards climbs past him.

“Luka (& Anthony Edwards), they are on the way. They’re hitting those marks that I hit at that time, that LeBron hit, Kobe hit at that age. … I just hope that moment is as special for them as it is for me, passing the greats that I looked up to and watched when I was younger. I hope I left that impact on the game,” Durant said during the podcast.

This statement from Durant came just a day after he reached a major personal milestone. In a game against the Miami Heat, Durant moved into fifth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, passing Michael Jordan.

The moment happened late in the fourth quarter. Reed Sheppard passed to Durant, who was now free in the corner with just over four minutes to go.

Without hesitation, he rose up and knocked down a 3-pointer. That single shot pushed his career total to 32,294 points, marking the exact play where he moved ahead of Jordan.

To understand how far Durant still has to go, you only need to look at where the all-time list stands. LeBron James is at the top and is still adding to his tally. He is sitting at 43,241 points.

Behind him are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone (36,928), and Kobe Bryant (33,643). Durant is now in fifth, as mentioned earlier.

As for Dončić, he currently has 14,851 career points and sits around the 178th spot on the all-time list. That is a big gap.

But here is the thing. The Slovenian star is only 27 years old. This season, he is averaging 33.4 points, 8.4 assists, and 7.9 rebounds per game, making him the league leader in points scored.

The same kind of argument can also be made for Edwards. He is currently averaging 29.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game this season and is third in scoring in the league right now. Like Dončić, Edwards still has age on his side and continues to improve each year.

If both of them stay healthy and keep playing at this level, reaching and passing Durant is not a stretch at all. Some would even argue that catching LBJ is not out of the question if everything falls into place.

But basketball has a way of surprising you. Injuries happen, form dips, and circumstances change. It remains to be seen exactly how this story plays out.
