Kevin Durant Reunites With Old Friend From Suns Days After Blockbuster Trade to Rockets

Kevin Durant and a former Phoenix Suns teammate link up during Drake's performance at the Wireless music festival in London on Friday.

Sometimes the best moments happen away from the court. Kevin Durant and Devin Booker just proved that their bond runs deeper than basketball when they reunited at Drake’s concert in London, weeks after Durant’s trade split up one of the NBA’s most talked-about duos.

What Does This Reunion Mean About Durant and Booker’s Relationship?

In a photo that has gone viral, a fan got the chance to click a picture with Kevin Durant and Devin Booker as they attended Drake’s Friday-night performance at the Wireless Festival in London. Drake is headlining each of the three nights of the three-day hip-hop and rap festival in the United Kingdom.

The timing makes this moment even more meaningful. Late last month, Durant was traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets, while Booker recently signed a record-breaking two-year $145 million extension to lock him into a contract with the Suns through the 2029-30 NBA season.

As Drake thrilled the audience with his chart-busting music, basketball fans quickly noticed that Booker and Durant were attending the performance. The photo of them posing with a fellow hip-hop enthusiast went viral on X.

The setting was perfect for these two stars to connect. When Booker posted a video clip of the duo’s best moments on the court after the Durant trade became official, this video was set to the music of Drake’s 2023 song, Stories About My Brother. The video featured a verse from the song: “Let me tell you ’bout my brother.”

How Did Booker Really Feel About Playing With Durant?

The mutual respect between these players runs deep. After a Phoenix Suns game late in the regular season in April, a season in which they failed to make the playoffs.

Booker was asked about Durant after trade rumors swirled around the forward, and the guard said, “I mean, we still play together, but it’s just been a joy. From my favorite player to teammate, I don’t take it lightly, our relationship on and off the court. I’ve learnt so much from him. Still learn so much from him, day-to-day.”

That connection stayed strong even when trade talks heated up. Durant reportedly declined a mid-season trade in February that would have reunited him with Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.

The former Suns teammates’ appreciation for each other has been mutual. On April 1, 2024, Booker scored 52 points against the New Orleans Pelicans and became only the second player after Wilt Chamberlain to have three consecutive 50-plus point games against the same opponent.

Durant couldn’t hide his admiration for what he witnessed. “It was like déjà vu as it was happening,” Durant said during his post-game media duties. “You look up, he’s got 20 points in the first quarter. Then what I loved about it, everything was in the flow of the game from the start. Pin downs, catch-and-shoots, cuts to the rim, layups, going through pull-ups. That’s the sign of an otherworldly scorer when you can do it in the flow of the offense like that.”

However, their time together didn’t deliver the results Phoenix fans hoped for. After the Durant trade, NBA writer Will Eudy recapped the duo’s time together in Phoenix for valleyofthesuns.com and wrote, “The Durant era will be remembered as one of the most hyped stretches in Suns history, but also one of the most underwhelming. There was talent and expectations, but in the end, there was not enough winning to justify any of it.”

As the photo went viral on Friday, Phoenix Suns fans were likely wondering, “What could have been?” The team didn’t even make a conference final in the Durant-Booker era. Now, the Phoenix faithful will be hoping for Booker and the newly acquired Jalen Green to try and resurrect the team’s fortunes.
