Jontay Porter Makes Surprise Return to Pro Basketball Nearly 2 Years After Lifetime Ban From NBA for Gambling

Jontay Porter starts for the Seattle Superhawks tonight in his first pro game since the NBA banned him for life in 2024.

Jontay Porter’s basketball career appeared to be over after the NBA handed down one of its harshest punishments. Jontay Porter Returns to Professional Basketball With Seattle Superhawks

Porter has signed with the Seattle Superhawks of the United States Basketball League (USBL), marking his first professional appearance since being banned for life by the NBA in April 2024. The signing quickly drew national attention, far exceeding league officials’ initial expectations.

USBL CEO David Otto acknowledged that the reaction was far broader and more critical than anticipated. “We figured there may be some coverage, but in all likelihood we thought it would be more local than national,” Otto told Front Office Sports. “We were a little surprised by the scope, and also some of the negativity.”

Porter’s NBA ban followed a league investigation that concluded he had bet on NBA games and manipulated his on-court performance for gamblers while playing for the Toronto Raptors. The 26-year-old later pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in July 2024 as part of a federal gambling investigation and is still awaiting sentencing. He could face up to 20 years in prison.

Despite those circumstances, USBL leadership says the league believes Porter deserves an opportunity to rebuild his career. Otto emphasized that the organization views his situation through the lens of redemption. “He’s a young guy who’s looking to redeem himself and rebuild his life,” Otto told Front Office Sports. “That is what the USBL is all about.”

Porter is scheduled to start for the Superhawks in a game against the Lilac City Legends at Royal Brougham Pavilion at Seattle Pacific University. Head coach Robert Pack, a former NBA player with a 13-year career, believes Porter can still contribute significantly on the court.

“He’s a very talented player,” Pack told Front Office Sports. “Jontay has been working hard in practice every day. He has a great basketball IQ, has the ability to play both inside and outside, and is a very good passer.”

Porter’s NBA Career and USBL Contract Details

Porter’s professional résumé prior to the ban was relatively limited. After injuries shortened his college career at the University of Missouri, he went undrafted in 2019. Over two NBA seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors, he played 37 games, averaging just under four points, nearly three rebounds, and under two assists in roughly 11 minutes per appearance. His total career earnings were just under $2.7 million.

Financially, the move to the USBL represents a much smaller stage. League salaries typically fall in the “mid to high five figures,” meaning Porter could earn close to $100,000 per season. His contract details were not disclosed, and league officials noted that players who cannot participate in games generally do not receive compensation.

USBL Revival Brings New Spotlight to League

Porter’s return also brings attention to the USBL itself. Originally launched in 1985 as a developmental league, the organization previously hosted players such as Spud Webb, Muggsy Bogues, Manute Bol, and Anthony Mason before ceasing operations in 2008. The current version of the league emerged after a split from The Basketball League and is experimenting with a blockchain-based ownership model, according to Otto.

Whether Porter’s comeback becomes a redemption story or remains overshadowed by controversy may depend on both his legal situation and his performance on the court. For now, his unexpected return has already placed the USBL in the national spotlight.
