The Golden State Warriors are facing a difficult situation with forward Jonathan Kuminga. The 23-year-old has been at the center of trade discussions for weeks, and now an injury has complicated matters even further.
Kuminga’s future with the team has been uncertain all season. He has played in just 20 games this year and sat out 16 straight games before returning recently. The Warriors have received calls from multiple teams regarding his availability, and with the Feb. 5 trade deadline approaching, the timing could not be worse for this latest setback.
What’s the Latest on Jonathan Kuminga?
Kuminga suffered a bone bruise in his right knee during Thursday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks. He left the court with less than four minutes remaining in the second quarter and did not return. The Warriors went on to lose the game 123-115.
The injury occurred on a fast-break play as Kuminga drove hard to the basket. He took an awkward step during the drive and was fouled by Mavericks guard Brandon Williams.
Kuminga landed awkwardly after the contact, with his right ankle twisting underneath him while his right knee was hyperextended at the same time. He remained on the floor briefly before getting up.
Despite clearly being in pain, the forward made both free throws. After converting them, Kuminga immediately signaled to the bench that he needed to come out of the game. He walked to the locker room with a visible limp and declined to speak with reporters afterward.

An MRI was conducted on Friday, Jan. 24, confirming the bone bruise caused by the hyperextension. The team announced that his progress will be monitored closely, but no re-evaluation date has been set, leaving his return timeline unclear.
Before the injury, Kuminga was having a strong outing. He scored 10 points in just nine minutes, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and making all four of his free throws. Golden State was receiving valuable production from him off the bench.
The injury comes at an especially difficult time. Kuminga had just rejoined the rotation two games earlier, returning Tuesday against Toronto after missing 16 consecutive games.
According to StatMuse, Kuminga is averaging 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season while shooting 45.4% from the field and 32.1% from beyond the arc.
The Warriors need him healthy, particularly after Jimmy Butler suffered a season-ending ACL tear last week, an injury that opened up additional minutes for Kuminga. However, with this setback, his future with Golden State remains very much in doubt.
The forward has also had a public fallout with head coach Steve Kerr, who has at times criticized him publicly. Reports indicate the Sacramento Kings are among the teams showing strong interest, but the injury could be a major factor in where Kuminga plays when he returns.
