While the rest of the NBA focused on new players and revamped rosters, Golden State Warriors fans waited for a decision on Jonathan Kuminga’s situation. Rumors of a rift between Kuminga and head coach Steve Kerr continued to pour in, ultimately making for extended offseason drama.
However, the three-month-long restricted free agency period came to an end when Kuminga and the Warriors agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million contract. And while the Warriors’ offseason has been heavily criticized, they have to move on as a team as the 2025-26 campaign begins.
Jonathan Kuminga Breaks Silence on Golden State Warriors Future
During a recent conversation with the media, Kuminga opened up about his new role with the Warriors. Despite the turbulent few months, the 22-year-old seemed focused and ready to tackle another year with the team.
Jonathan Kuminga on his role: “Being involved in both sides. Finds a way to impact. If it’s on defense, an assignment, just go guard the best player.”

“Being involved in both sides. Finds a way to impact. If it’s on defense, an assignment, just go guard the best player,” Kuminga said. “I’ve seen certain things where people think I only think about offense. I’m always going to get better on both ends.”
Of course, Kuminga — just like the rest of the team — is focused on bringing home another NBA championship. With superstar Stephen Curry nearing the end of his illustrious career, the team has a small window it needs to capitalize on.
“I would say so based on me being back here, official now,” Kuminga said. “At the end of the day, let’s see where this takes us. My focus this year is pushing and actually helping us win.”
He did admit that negotiations and contracts are just a part of the NBA, which is, ultimately, a business. Eventually, one has to step up and pick what’s best for them.
“It’s part of what we do, it’s a business. At the end of the day all that matters is we got it done. I’m excited to be here. … I’m blessed.”
Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr Speaks on Kuminga’s Status
Kerr also spoke to the media about the young player’s availability. Sharing a positive update, Kerr seemed confident about Kuminga’s ability to ready himself before the season begins.
“He looked good. I think Jonathan’s in good condition. He’s been working out,” Kerr said. “He’s running sprints down there right now.”
The Warriors will open the preseason with a matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, Oct. 5.
