Should You Draft Jonathan Kuminga in Fantasy Basketball?

After an offseason full of restricted-free-agency headlines and tense negotiations, Jonathan Kuminga re-signed with the Golden State Warriors on a two-year, $48.5 million contract. The big question with Kuminga is whether the Warriors will look to trade him once he’s eligible to be moved on Jan. 15 since he didn’t sign a long-term deal with the franchise.

If Kuminga stays put, he will likely play the same role that we saw last season when he averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and a 3-pointer in 24.3 minutes per game. His shooting percentages (45.4% from the field, 30.5% from 3-point range, and 66.8% from the free-throw line) are concerning in category leagues, and his lack of minutes on the Warriors limits his ceiling. However, if injuries (or a trade) force Kuminga into a bigger role, he has shown that he can take advantage of the increased opportunity, particularly as a scorer.

The Chicago Bulls and Sacramento Kings are reportedly interested in trading for Kuminga later this year, and that may be the best-case scenario for the 23-year-old’s fantasy outlook, as it would allow him to start, become a focal point on offense, and take the next step in his development
