The Philadelphia 76ers have missed their cornerstone, Joel Embiid, for most of the past year, but things may finally be turning around. Embiid’s knee injury derailed the Sixers’ 2024–25 season, limiting him to just 19 games and forcing the team into a disappointing 24–58 finish.
Now, as preseason wraps up, fans are waiting to see if the two-time NBA scoring champion might finally suit up again, and Nick Nurse’s latest update offered a dose of optimism.
Nick Nurse Drops Optimistic Update About Joel Embiid’s Return
When asked if Embiid might play in Friday’s, October 17, preseason finale against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Sixers head coach didn’t hesitate much before answering.
“I think there is some chance,” Nurse said.
It was just six words, but enough to stir excitement across Philadelphia.
Embiid, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in April, has been slowly ramping up activity.
Earlier this week, the team announced that he was a partial participant in practice after already taking part in the Sixers’ Blue X White scrimmage on Sunday. Â Both signs point toward meaningful progress.
Still, Nurse isn’t ready to make promises.
“I don’t think we’re there yet,” he explained. “It’s a little early in the week to decide, but I think it could still go either way. We got some thresholds to get over yet before we get to that point.”
That measured tone reflects the team’s cautious approach. Philadelphia isn’t rushing its franchise star, but the coach’s remarks suggest that Embiid’s return may not be far off.
Since his surgery, Embiid has emphasized patience in his recovery, determined to return only when fully ready. It’s a sensible approach for a player whose value to the team is immeasurable.
Embiid is their system and the anchor of the team. The seven-time All-Star and 2023 NBA MVPÂ controls both ends of the floor with his scoring, rebounding, and rim protection.
Without him, the Sixers have struggled to stay competitive, relying heavily on Tyrese Maxey as the lead scorer and playmaker while developing young wings like Quentin Grimes.
That’s why every small step in Embiid’s recovery means something. His scrimmage participation showed that his mobility is improving, and his recent practice reps indicate the team is preparing for a gradual return.
If he doesn’t appear in Friday’s preseason finale, the focus will shift to the regular-season opener against the Boston Celtics on October 22Â — a potential target for his comeback.
So, while Coach Nurse and the Sixers are in no rush to bring back Embiid, there’s hope that the talented center will be back on the roster soon.
The team knows that a healthy Embiid means wins and relevance in a deep Eastern Conference. And if his coach’s latest comments are any indication, the 7-foot big man’s return might be closer than anyone expected.
