Joe Johnson Predicts the Heat’s Struggles Will Lead to ‘Some Real Changes This Summer’

Former star Joe Johnson predicts the Miami Heat's recent struggles will force them to make real roster changes this summer.

Former Miami Heat star Joe Johnson believed the Miami Heat would ring in major changes this summer, likely building around Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro.

The Heat are still scrambling for a playoff spot. They are ninth in the Eastern Conference with a 38-33 record and are on a four-game losing streak.

Joe Johnson Predicts Big Offseason Moves for the Miami Heat

Speaking to NFL legend Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson on the latest episode of the “Nightcap” podcast, Johnson believed the Heat would be a busy team this offseason, irrespective of where the team finishes its current season.

“Bam has been doing his thing. I got Miami making some real changes this summer, though,” Johnson said. “It’s good that Herro is playing well because I think he’s going to be a part of it. Y’all need another game changer over there, Ocho.”

Adebayo is coming off a historic performance for the Heat this season with his 83 points, surpassing Kobe Bryant for the second-most points in a single game. He has been durable for the side this season, averaging 20.4 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game in 62 appearances.

Herro has dealt with an injury-riddled season but has been active for the side in its recent stretch of games. The guard averages 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in 24 games. In his absence, Norman Powell has had a solid run with 22.3 points per game, while Andrew Wiggins is propping up 15.9 points.

It has been a season of injuries and inconsistency for the Heat. While their performances at the start of the year promised an impressive finish to their regular season, their slide by the end of March has left them languishing ninth in the standings. The offense has blown hot and cold, while transition defense and turnovers have cost them winnable games.

On the summer front, the Heat have been linked to major names including Giannis Antetokounmpo, Ja Morant, and Donovan Mitchell. Acquiring any of these names would mean the Heat would have to involve Herro in the deal. However, many of these appear to be rumors at this stage.

The Heat won seven games in a row before dropping their next four. Their most recent loss was on the road against the Houston Rockets.

The string of defeats sees them trail the Orlando Magic (38-32). The Philadelphia 76ers are seventh with a 39-32 record, while the Atlanta Hawks are sixth with the same record.

The upcoming stretch only gets more challenging for Adebayo and Co. as they host the in-form San Antonio Spurs on Monday (March 23) at the Kaseya Center. They follow this up with a two-game skirmish against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
