Is JJ Redick Staying With The Los Angeles Lakers?

The big call made by the Lakers this week regarding Redick only signals how much trust the franchise is placing in their leadership in guiding their stars. After just one year at the helm, Redick has been rewarded with a contract extension.

At a press conference on Thursday, general manager Rob Pelinka confirmed that the organization has locked him in for the long haul.

“Confidence and belief,” Pelinka said when asked about the decision. “We think he’s a special coach with a special voice that’s really helping us define the culture of Lakers excellence. We just wanted to make a clear statement that this is what we believe in, what we’re going to lean into, and what our players are going to mold into.”

Redick had originally signed a four-year, $32 million deal in 2024, his first as an NBA head coach. Despite his inexperience, he steered the Lakers to a 50-32 record and the No. 3 seed in the West before a first-round playoff exit. By extending him early, the Lakers hope to eliminate uncertainty and strengthen continuity around LeBron James and Luka Dončić.

Redick’s Philosophy and Future Outlook

Redick admitted that his first season was a whirlwind, filled with the challenges of coaching for the first time. Moving his family and managing the seismic mid-season trade that brought Dončić to Los Angeles only added further to his chaos.

After the playoff exit, he turned to mentors like Sean McVay, Tom Brady, and Bill Belichick to refine his approach.

His takeaway was simple but ambitious. “We’re going to ask guys to be in championship shape, have championship communication, and championship habits. That’s a daily commitment.”

The extension caps a productive offseason in which the Lakers added Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia to balance their roster. LeBron James opted into the final year of his contract, while Dončić secured a three-year, $165 million extension.

By recommitting to Redick, the Lakers are signaling that they see him as the architect of their next chapter.
