Jimmy Butler III’s Injury Background: Fall in Game 2 and Initial Diagnosis

Butler fell while chasing a loose ball in the second quarter of Game 2, resulting in a left pelvic contusion and glute muscle soreness. This forced him out of the contest late in the first half.

An MRI performed shortly after revealed no fractures or structural damage. However, it confirmed a deep glute bruise that required ongoing therapy and limited practice.

Butler missed Game 3 because of the severity of the contusion, but the Warriors rallied and defeated Oklahoma City 104-93 on the shoulders of Stephen Curry’s 36 points. After the victory, both the Warriors’ medical staff and Butler’s agent indicated that his return would depend on how he responded to treatment.

However, the 35-year-old veteran returned for Game 4 as a boon for the Warriors. In the most recent official release, Butler is not listed on Friday’s injury report, an indication that the forward practiced without issues and will be expected to play against Houston.

Insiders confirmed his “probable” status for Game 6, which is the same classification he had prior to Game 5 in Houston. Butler fully took part in Thursday’s pre-game walkthrough at Chase Center, indicating he has recovered game-ready strength and mobility, stating, “It’s getting better. You know, another day and some change of recovery and rest.”

What Butler Could Bring to the Court?

Butler’s playoff averages of 14.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists will bolster a Warriors offense that sputtered for stretches in Game 5’s 131-116 loss in Houston.

The capacity to create mid-range jumpers and drive-and-kick chances for others should ease the scoring burden on Curry, who teamed with Butler for a combined 21 points on 22 shots in Game 5.

Defensively, Butler has been charged with holding back Houston’s Jalen Green, a job he accepted before getting hurt, keeping Green under season playoff averages. His return provides the Warriors with a versatile stopper for Houston’s dynamic guards.

A Warriors victory in Game 6 would lock up the series and advance them to the Western Conference semifinals. Before a raucous crowd at Chase Center, Butler’s return could be the difference-maker in turning the momentum around in the Dubs’ direction.

Assuming Butler’s “probable” status holds, the Golden State Warriors will enter Game 6 with a clean injury report, an advantage rarely enjoyed in the high-stakes playoff grind.
