Jayson Tatum Links Up With Red Sox Stars Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer at Patriots vs. Steelers

Jayson Tatum joins Red Sox stars at Gillette amid Achilles rehab, sparking buzz as Celtics fans await his return to the court.

Boston sports fans were in for a treat this weekend, as one of the city’s biggest stars, Jayson Tatum made an unexpected appearance at Gillette Stadium. The New England Patriots’ Week 3 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers had plenty of drama on the field, but it was the action before kickoff that really caught attention.

Tatum showed up with his young son, stole the spotlight in a bold red sweater, and even shared a moment with two of the Red Sox’s brightest young players.

Jayson Tatum Joins Red Sox Stars at Gillette Stadium

Before the Patriots and Steelers kicked off at Gillette Stadium, NBA champion Tatum walked onto the field with his son, Deuce. The Celtics forward, recovering from an Achilles injury, drew loud cheers from fans as he shook hands with the Red Sox stars Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer.

The rare crossover of Boston’s biggest sports names made the pregame scene feel like a celebration of the city’s athletic culture. Tatum also stood out for his outfit, wearing a red sweater to match the Patriots’ throwback uniforms for the afternoon.

It wasn’t his first NFL stop this year, either. Over the past few months, Tatum has been spotted at several football events, from Patriots training camp in August to a New York Jets-Buffalo Bills game at MetLife Stadium. Clearly, despite being sidelined from basketball, he has made football outings a part of his rehab routine.

The Patriots ultimately lost 21-14 to Pittsburgh, but for many in attendance, the pregame glimpse of Boston’s stars together was the real highlight.

Latest Updates on Tatum’s Injury Recovery

Behind the lighthearted moment at Gillette stadium is a much more serious storyline: Tatum’s recovery from a ruptured right Achilles tendon.

He suffered the injury on May 12, 2025, in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Knicks. Attempting to chase a loose ball, he went down without contact, grimaced in pain, and was later seen leaving the court in a wheelchair. Within 24 hours, he underwent surgery, which the Celtics called successful.

Tatum’s injury was a huge blow for the Celtics hopes of winning back-to-back NBA championship trophies. Joe Mazzulla and Co. eventually fell to the Knicks 4-2 in the 2025 Eastern Conference semifinals.

Meanwhile, the rehab process for Tatum has been long, but so far, encouraging. According to NBC Sports Boston’s Darren Hartwell, Tatum has been relentless in his recovery:

“The Celtics are very happy with how hard Jayson Tatum has been working at his rehab, and his level of focus and intensity in the rehab process,” Hartwell said. “He did not leave town. He has been here the entire time. … Since the injury, he has not left town and he has been inside the building at the Celtics’ facility with their people and their team almost every single day for months. … He’s doing things that nobody asked him to do.

For Celtics fans, seeing him upright and moving well on the sidelines is encouraging. Tatum has shed his walking boot and is now rehabbing almost daily at the team’s facility. While many analysts believe he could miss the entire 2025-26 season, there is cautious optimism that he may return after the All-Star break, possibly in March 2026.

This injury marks the first time in his career that Tatum has missed a significant chunk of a season, and the impact is enormous. Boston built much of its recent success around him, including its 2024 championship run.

Last season alone, he averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and six assists per game, numbers that underscore how much his absence will be felt. Without him, the Celtics’ front office has already made offseason moves designed to soften the blow, but replacing both his production and leadership is no easy task.

Even as he focuses on rehab, his consistent presence at NFL games shows a player trying to stay active and connected while sidelined. To fans, seeing him upright, smiling with Deuce, is a major boost to their hopes of seeing the star back on court soon.
