Jayson Tatum Makes a Bold Promise to Celtics Fans Ahead of 2025–26 Season

As the Celtics enter a new season without their superstar, Jayson Tatum made a promise that has Boston fans buzzing about what comes next.

Jayson Tatum led the Boston Celtics to their 18th championship in 2024, ending a 16-year title drought. In 2025, he was again leading from the front as the Celtics bulldozed their way into the playoffs with a 61-22 record, trouncing the Orlando Magic 3-2 in the first round.

But Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on May 12, 2025, shattered the Celtics’ hopes of another championship run. Tatum suffered a right Achilles tendon injury, underwent surgery the next day, and was ruled out for most of the 2025-26 season.

Without Tatum, Boston’s championship odds plummeted, and most analysts now believe the team has entered a “gap year.” The Celtics appear content to wait for their franchise cornerstone to return healthy before making another push for Banner No. 19.

What Promise Has Jayson Tatum Made to Celtics Fans?

For the first time since 2016, the Boston Celtics will open a new campaign without Jayson Tatum on the court.

Still, Tatum isn’t ready to let go of championship talk. He insists the Celtics have what it takes to win, and he made a promise to fans that will sound like music to their ears.

After a brief trip to Toronto on Friday, Tatum was back in Boston on Saturday to launch his new “Tatum 4” shoes.

At the event, when asked about his favorite moments from the past five years in Boston, Tatum smiled and didn’t hesitate to share that it was the day when the Celtics won the championship:

“It’s not even a question. I got two kids. I got drafted. And the parade was the best day of my life.

Then Tatum made a promise to Boston fans that the Celtics will bring another banner sooner than they think:

“And I promise you we’re going to have another one,” Tatum said.

While Tatum, a six-time All-Star, continues to rehab, the Celtics have moved several veterans to ease salary cap pressure. Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porziņģis, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet are all gone, part of a quieter offseason that many have interpreted as Boston’s version of a reset year.

Yet there’s growing optimism that Tatum is ahead of schedule in his recovery and could make a comeback by March, just in time for the playoffs. He’s been seen frequently working out at the team’s facilities, sitting courtside during preseason games, and staying close to his teammates.

According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, Tatum has already informed the Celtics that he intends to return at some point this season.

Expectations should still be tempered because assuming Tatum will be at full strength immediately is unrealistic. But his mere presence would be a massive boost for Boston.

Jaylen Brown, who will shoulder the offensive load in Tatum’s absence, would gain much-needed help, and the Celtics might just find a way to break through again come playoff time.
