Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown came to Bam Adebayo’s defense as the latter continued to face criticism for his recent feat of surpassing Kobe Bryant’s record of 81 points. Adebayo achieved this milestone in a historic night against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday.
Boston Celtics’ Star Jaylen Brown Backs Bam Abedayo’s Historical Feat Amid Criticisms
On his podcast, Boston Celtics star Brown backed Adebayo while critics continued to claim that the latter stat-padded to surpass Kobe’s 81-point single-game record. Many critics accused Miami of boosting Adebayo’s scoring, arguing that the high number of free throws inflated the total.
Adebayo scored 31 points in the first quarter and went up to 43 by halftime, leaving fans cheering. By the time the game ended, he had 83 points to his name, successfully surpassing Bryant to record the second-highest single-game scoring total, only behind Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point performance.
During his 81-point game in 2006 against the Toronto Raptors, Bryant made 18 of 20 free throws, a stark contrast to Adebayo’s 43 attempts.
Amid the criticism, Brown found no valid reason for the massive backlash and shed light on Washington’s poor defensive display, stating, “Records are meant to be broken… He [Adebayo] did exactly what he was supposed to do. I don’t see why there has to be any criticism. If anybody deserves criticism, it’s the Washington Wizards.”
Miami entered the matchup on the back of a five-game win streak, while the Wizards were on an eight-game losing streak. In a night that went down in history, Washington’s defense failed to contain Adebayo, who managed to get his shots away.
After the game, Adebayo addressed the excessive criticism he received following his historic outing and refused to pay any heed to the noise.
“If you are mad, I don’t care. Because a lot of people, they’re upset because if they did play, they never had a chance to get that close to chasing greatness. And if you get that close to chasing greatness, that’s the point of chasing it, so you can surpass it,” Adebayo said.
Coach Erik Spoelstra joined forces and backed his player, stating, “Look, no, I apologize to absolutely no one. Period. And going into the game, it’s a Tuesday night game against a team where they’re not playing for anything, where their organization is trying to lose… I would do it ten times out of ten again for Bam. I’m apologizing to nobody about this… because he [Adebayo] is about, you know, all the right things.”
With his explosive 83-point outing, Adebayo also set a franchise record for the most points in the first quarter, surpassing the 25-point mark set by LeBron James in 2014.
