James Harden Credits Paint Penetration as Key to Cavaliers’ Offensive Success

James Harden pointed to paint penetration as the key to Cleveland's offense after posting 27 points in a win vs. the Bucks.

James Harden has been many things over the course of his career. He’s been a scorer, a playmaker, a shot-creator. On Tuesday, we saw glimpses of all three in his vintage best, which led the Cavaliers’ offense to tick up. He finished with 27 points and six assists as Cleveland managed to hold off Milwaukee 123-116 at Fiserv Forum. He left absolutely no doubt about where he believes the offense does the best work.

James Harden Identifies Paint Penetration as Cleveland’s Most Dangerous Weapon

Speaking to reporters after the win, Harden was straightforward about the winning formula. “When I get into the paint, good things happen for our team, so I just gotta be more consistent in that aspect of the game,” he said. “We got so many great shooters, athletic bigs, so when I get into the paint, good things happen for our team.”

It is hard to argue with the logic. Harden has spent his career weaponizing paint penetration to either finish, draw fouls, or collapse defenses for open looks on the perimeter.

On the Cavaliers roster, which is built around spacing and movement, that skill fits seamlessly. On Tuesday, he shot 7-of-10 from the field and went 11-of-13 from the free-throw line, a performance that embodied exactly what he was describing.
Cleveland dominated Milwaukee in the paint 56-34 on the night and went 27-of-34 from the stripe to offset the Bucks’ 20 three-pointers.

Harden wasn’t just talking about his own game, either. He made clear that his teammates benefit most when he forces the defense to react to his drives. The Cavaliers have Sam Merrill, Keon Ellis, and Donovan Mitchell, all capable of knocking down shots off kick-outs.

So Harden, who is consistently hunting the paint, makes life far easier for everyone around him. Merrill, who returned to the starting lineup Tuesday, finished with 17 points and led both teams with a plus-22 plus/minus, with a pair of timely three-pointers helping to fuel the decisive 8-0 run in the fourth quarter that put the game away.

The night belonged to Evan Mobley just as much as Harden, though. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year posted 27 points and 15 rebounds, going 12-of-21 from the floor with six offensive boards and three blocks.

Even after that showing, Harden made clear he expects more. “He should’ve had 35 and 20, but I’ll take it,” Harden said of Mobley. “Just being aggressive on both ends of the basketball. He’s our anchor defensively, so running around the rim, finishing the basketball, and just being in our offense.”

James Harden’s Impact on Cleveland’s Playoff Push

Since arriving in Cleveland, Harden has slotted into Kenny Atkinson’s system with impressive fluidity, averaging 24.0 points, 8.0 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game. The Cavaliers are now 11-4 in games he plays, with Tuesday’s win extending a stretch of form that has firmly established him as a key piece of their championship aspirations.

Donovan Mitchell chipped in 19 points on Tuesday despite an off shooting night, getting to the line 13 times and grabbing eight rebounds, while Harden’s playmaking kept the offense functioning through the Bucks’ various runs.

Cleveland tied a season-low with just seven turnovers on the night, a number that matters to a team that has emphasized ball security through the season’s homestretch.

The Cavaliers stay on the road for their next two games, heading to Chicago on Thursday before closing the trip in New Orleans on Saturday. The paint, Harden says, is where it starts, and on current evidence, Cleveland’s opponents would be wise to take that warning seriously.
