Is Jalen Williams Playing Tonight? Latest Update on Thunder Star’s Injury Status for Game 5 of WCF vs. Spurs

Jalen Williams remains questionable for Game 5 against the Spurs with Oklahoma City facing a crucial injury concern in the WCF.

The Oklahoma City Thunder could once again head into a crucial Western Conference Finals game shorthanded, with Jalen Williams’ availability remaining uncertain ahead of Tuesday’s Game 5 against the San Antonio Spurs.

After Oklahoma City’s offense completely stalled in Game 4, his status has quickly become one of the biggest factors in a series now tied at 2-2.

What to Expect from Jalen Williams in Game 5 Against the Spurs

Williams remains questionable for Game 5 as he continues dealing with left hamstring injury management.

ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon shared the latest update on X, revealing that Oklahoma City slightly changed Williams’ designation heading into Tuesday night.

“OKC’s Jalen Williams is listed as questionable again for Game 5, but the injury designation has been changed from left hamstring soreness to strain. Ajay Mitchell (soleus) is out again.”

The change may seem minor, but it comes at an important time for Oklahoma City because Williams’ absence has already had a visible impact on the series.

The Thunder were without both Williams and Mitchell in Sunday’s Game 4 loss, and the result was their worst offensive showing of the season. Oklahoma City managed only 82 points while shooting a dismal 33% from the field, as the Spurs cruised after building a 25-point lead.

San Antonio’s defense deserves plenty of credit as well. Instead of aggressively trapping Shai Gilgeous-Alexander high on the floor, the Spurs waited until he attacked downhill before collapsing with nearby help defenders.

The strategy worked perfectly, as Gilgeous-Alexander finished with only 19 points, a rare off-night by his standards, since the NBA world is accustomed to watching him put up 20+ points almost every time the Canadian prodigy hits the floor.

That game also highlighted how much Oklahoma City misses Williams when he is unavailable. If SGA is trapped, OKC is left with no reliable secondary scorer to fill the gap, and that was quite evident in Game 4.

Without the go-to scoring punch of Williams, the offensive burden completely shifts onto Gilgeous-Alexander. It’s a troubling situation, since the Spurs now have a working strategy to restrict the reigning MVP.

Williams has now missed the past two games due to the hamstring issue.

He initially strained it during Game 2 of Oklahoma City’s first-round series against the Phoenix Suns on April 22, missed the entire second-round sweep over the Los Angeles Lakers, and then aggravated it again during Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against the Spurs.

The recurring nature of the injury is what makes this situation tricky. Hamstring injuries are often difficult to manage during deep playoff runs, and Oklahoma City has continued treating Williams as day-to-day.

For Williams personally, it has been a difficult season physically. J-Dub appeared in only 33 regular-season games, a career low, after opening the year recovering from wrist surgery before later dealing with hamstring setbacks.

Despite the injuries, he still entered the playoffs as one of Oklahoma City’s most important pieces.

Therefore, the 2025 All-Star’s value remains obvious. He averaged 17.8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists through four playoff appearances this year, while providing Oklahoma City with another creator next to Gilgeous-Alexander.

With the series tied and Game 5 historically carrying major weight in playoff matchups, the Thunder’s hopes of reclaiming control may depend heavily on whether Williams is able to return.

Oklahoma City already struggled to keep up with the Spurs’ relentless attack led by Victor Wembanyama in Game 4.

For a Thunder team chasing a second straight championship, another absence from Williams could leave Gilgeous-Alexander carrying an enormous load again at the worst possible time.
