Clippers Star Takes Hilarious Shot at Kawhi Leonard Amid Salary Cap Scandal

As NBA probes Kawhi Leonard’s $48M controversy, Clippers teammate Ivica Zubac lightens the mood with a viral joke over the star’s rough offseason.

Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers have been at the center of an NBA storm after allegations of salary cap circumvention surfaced earlier this month. Reports have linked Leonard to nearly $48 million in questionable payments from a bankrupt financial firm, prompting the league to launch a full-scale investigation.

But amid the chaos, one of Leonard’s teammates managed to find a lighter moment.

Ivica Zubac Had a Playful Jab at Kawhi Leonard

During a talk with Jamal Christopher, Clippers center Ivica Zubac was asked a harmless question: if he could swap lives with any of his teammates, who would it be?

Zubac didn’t hesitate, and his answer sent Christopher laughing.

“Being Kawhi this past summer was not easy, so I’m not picking Kawhi.” 💀

The playful jab quickly made the rounds online, offering a rare moment of levity in what has otherwise been a tense offseason for the Clippers.

It’s worth noting that Zubac has long been one of Leonard’s biggest admirers. Back in 2020, during an appearance on the I Am An Athlete podcast, Zubac described Leonard as “the best player in the league” and praised his quiet leadership and relentless consistency.

That history makes his recent remark all the more good-natured: a tease from a teammate who clearly respects the man at the center of the storm.

The controversy began when journalist Pablo Torre revealed that Leonard had signed a $28 million “no-show” endorsement deal with Aspiration, a financial company once backed by Clippers owner Steve Ballmer.

Later, a report by Boston Sports Journal suggested that Leonard had received $20 million in company stock, bringing the total value to about $48 million. With Aspiration now bankrupt and its co-founder pleading guilty to fraud, the deal quickly raised red flags about potential violations of league salary cap rules.

The NBA has since hired powerhouse law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, the same firm that handled the Donald Sterling and Robert Sarver investigations, to dig into the matter.

The potential fallout could be severe. Leonard could face penalties including the voiding of his contract, repayment of funds, and fines up to $350,000. The Clippers themselves risk fines as high as $7.5 million, the loss of draft picks, and possible suspensions for team executives, including owner Steve Ballmer.

Despite the ongoing investigation, though, the Clippers are pressing ahead with a veteran-heavy roster centered around James Harden, Leonard, and Zubac.

The front office also brought in reinforcements this offseason, headlined by Bradley Beal, Chris Paul, John Collins, and Brook Lopez, all in an effort to give this aging core one last strong title push.

The Clippers were eliminated by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2025 NBA playoffs. They are still waiting for their first championship.

But with a veteran-heavy roster this year, Tyronn Lue and Co. have a legit chance of a deep playoff run. But for that, Leonard and the Clippers have to come out clean from the salary cap circumvention controversy and put their focus on the title run.

So, for now, Zubac’s joke may have drawn some laughs, but behind the humor lies uncertainty. Leonard’s case could reshape his future with the Clippers and the franchise’s standing in a highly competitive Western Conference.
