Isiah Thomas Lauds LeBron James’ Ability to ‘Make the Right Play,’ Gives Kobe Bryant a Slight Edge in Clutch Situations

Isiah Thomas explains Kobe Bryant's slight edge over LeBron James in clutch moments to make a final bucket.

After Deron Williams, Isiah Thomas was the latest to weigh in on the “LeBron James or Kobe Bryant” debate during clutch situations. The former Detroit Pistons superstar offered a measured take on the long-standing comparison.

Williams preferred the “Black Mamba” over the Los Angeles Lakers superstar, a choice that sparked significant buzz on social media. Thomas provided a different perspective, comparing the specific strengths of the two Hall of Famers to reach his decision.

Isiah Thomas Favors Kobe Bryant Over LeBron James in Clutch Scenarios

Speaking on “Run It Back,” Thomas shed light on whom he would prefer between James and Bryant in clutch scenarios.

“I may have to go with Kobe, but it ain’t by much,” Thomas said. “Now to make the right play and win the game imma go with LeBron. If it’s the guy who has to score and make the bucket to win it, I’m going with Kobe because to me he’s a better perimeter shooter.”

Both Bryant and James are proven clutch performers despite their different approaches. Bryant, the late Lakers icon, made a name for himself by hitting difficult shots in key situations. He was known for embracing challenges head-on, often taking on defenders in isolation plays.

James reads game situations differently, often trusting his teammates to make the right play in the final seconds. If a teammate is in a better position to score, the four-time NBA champion typically sets up a play to maximize the team’s chances of winning. Because basketball is a team sport, both approaches remain valid depending on the context of the game.

In the same interview, Thomas picked James over Bryant and Michael Jordan as the greatest player in basketball history. “I’ve never seen a basketball player like LeBron James,” Thomas said.

“So, there’s the eye test, and then it’s about backing it up with the numbers. As I said last time, he’s breaking every single record that’s ever been set in the game of basketball, and he’s showing up in every individual category: rebounds, points, assists, games played, baskets made. He’s all over the board. There’s never been another player in the history of the game like LeBron James. So, does that make him the GOAT? In my opinion, yes.”

On the season front, all eyes are on James to see if he can lead the Lakers to a second title in his era with the franchise. After last winning the championship in 2020, James and the Lakers have been widely considered playoff contenders at best, though they currently sit third in the Western Conference with a 47-26 record. Only time will tell if he can add another ring to his tally and equal Bryant with five NBA titles.
