Former Louisville Cardinals standout Mikel Brown Jr. is preparing to take the floor next season with his own name displayed across the back of his jersey. Meanwhile, as he shares the same last name as Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown, many fans have been wondering whether the two basketball standouts are actually related.
What Is Mikel Brown Jr.’s Relationship to Jaylen Brown?
When an elite basketball prospect emerges with a recognizable surname, many often assume there is a family connection, and that has been the case with Mikel and Jaylen. While both share the same last name and have established themselves as standout basketball talents, they are not related.
The confusion is understandable, as Jaylen is a Georgia native, and Mikel spent his junior year playing in the Atlanta-based Overtime Elite (OTE) league. Their shared ties to Georgia during Mikel’s rise as a prospect might lead many to speculate about a possible family relationship, but no such connection exists.
Jaylen comes from an athletic family in Marietta, Georgia. He is the son of Mechalle Brown, a professional heavyweight boxer who won the WBU World Championship in 2016, and his mother is Marselles Brown.
As for Mikel, he hails from a completely different athletic family in Orlando, Florida. He is the son of Christopher Brown Sr. and Marisela Brown. Both parents have basketball backgrounds, with his father playing at West Florida and his mother competing for St. Petersburg College.
Though Mikel’s surname is unrelated to Jaylen’s, it holds deep personal significance, as the name honors his great-grandfather, who passed away last year.
“[My dad] kept saying, ‘He’s the reason, he’s the reason why your last name is Brown,’” Mikel told Andscape on May 11 during the NBA Pre-Draft Camp. “I carry that [obituary notice] that they gave us. It sits in one of my roller bags. So, I see it every time I take stuff out.”
Like Jaylen, who enjoyed an outstanding season while averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, Mikel also put together a promising 2025-26 season for Louisville. He was the Cardinals’ second-leading scorer with an average of 18.2 points per game, scoring 382 total.
Basketball became a part of Mikel’s life almost from birth, as his father regularly brought him to practices and even placed a basketball in his crib shortly after he came home as a baby.

“My love for basketball started from an early age,” Brown said, via NBA.com. “My dad was still hooping, so he used to take me to a lot of practices. I used to sleep in the dorms with them. He would take me to class while he was doing tests. And just always being there with him, and he put a ball in my hands early, and basketball has been in my life forever.”
As for Mikel’s draft outlook, he is one of several prospects the Brooklyn Nets are considering with their No. 6 pick, and he has already met with the organization on three occasions.
