Is Kevin Durant Playing Tonight? Latest Injury Update On Rockets Star For Game 3 Clash vs. Lakers

Kevin Durant is questionable for Game 3 against the Lakers as the Rockets look to bounce back from a 0-2 deficit.

Kevin Durant has a way of making the game look effortless, especially with those elegant jumpers, even when the stakes are at their highest. But when injury knocks on the door, even the greatest have to take a step back and rehabilitate.

The Houston Rockets are set to return home for a pivotal Game 3 against the Los Angeles Lakers this Friday night. But the biggest question buzzing around the Toyota Center will be about Durant’s health. After a rollercoaster week of medical updates, fans are eagerly awaiting to know if KD will suit up.

Kevin Durant Is Ruled Out For Game 3

With 0-2 in the series, the Rockets are staring at a must-win situation, and having the 37-year-old superstar on the floor could be what makes all the difference between a comeback and a sweep for them. But the luck star hasn’t been shinning the brightest over Durant.

Kevin Durant’s postseason misfortunes began on April 15, when he suffered a right knee contusion during practice. As a result, he was sidelined for the 2026 Playoff Opener on Saturday, and the Rockets dropped Game 1 in a 98-107 loss without him.

Though Durant recovered enough to play in Game 2, the Rockets still couldn’t stop the Lakers’ momentum, resulting in another critical 94-101 loss at Crypto.com Arena.

Durant spent 41 minutes on the court and scored 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while shooting 7-of-12 from the field and 1-of-4 from deep. But those blazing nine turnovers were his career’s highest committed TO in a playoff game.

With the upcoming crucial Game 3, the Rockets ruled him out for the clash.

If Durant remains absent throughout the series, the pressure shifts heavily toward Houston’s depth. Rotowire reported that “Head coach Ime Udoka already vowed Thursday to give Reed Sheppard more playing time in Game 3, so the guard appears primed for significant minutes whether Durant is available to play or not.”

Coach Udoka’s plan to increase Sheppard’s minutes suggests the team is preparing for a scenario in which they might lack Durant’s frame and elite offensive gravity. Sheppard has averaged 8.5 points, 5.5 assists, and 1.0 steals in the last 2 games.

The Rockets’ offense struggled for consistency against the Lakers in the first two games. But losing a primary option who averaged 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists on 52.0% shooting during the 2025-26 regular season is a daunting prospect. Whether Durant starts or watches from the bench will be known today at 8 p.m. EST.
