What Is Joel Embiid’s Status For Tonight?

Embiid is listed as out on the official NBA injury report under the designation of post-appendectomy surgery recovery. He underwent a successful emergency appendectomy on April 9 while the team was in Houston, was discharged the following day, and has since returned to Philly.

Head coach Nick Nurse told media over the weekend that all signs point to his recovery going well, but that has not changed his availability for tonight.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Embiid is not expected to play at any point during the Play-In Tournament. Charania mentioned on NBA Today that the recovery process involves more than just physical healing, as Embiid will need to complete a separate rehabilitation phase before being cleared for game action.

His status heading into a first-round series is considered doubtful at this stage. But that’s if the Sixers make it past the play-in, and with Embiid on the sidelines, their chances look real slim.

The timing is brutal. Embiid appeared in just 38 regular-season games this year, averaging 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game, and his absence already cost the Sixers a chance at the sixth seed when they fell to Houston the night he had his surgery.

Philadelphia scraped together wins in its final two regular-season games to clinch the seventh seed, but now it must go through the Play-In without him.

The burden falls on Tyrese Maxey, who averaged 28.3 points and 6.6 assists across 70 games this season. Maxey is set to make an appearance against Orlando tonight. despite a tendon strain.

Rookie big man Johni Broome is also out with right knee surgery recovery, making the frontcourt situation even thinner.

Andre Drummond and Adem Bona figure to carry the interior load against a Magic team that led the league in free-throw attempts this season. The winner tonight advances as the No. 7 seed to face the Boston Celtics, while the loser gets another shot at the No. 8 seed on Friday.
