With both the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets shorthanded, LeBron James made his presence felt from the jump during their series-opening first-round playoff clash in Los Angeles on Saturday evening.
Along the way, the 22-time All-Star set multiple franchise and NBA postseason records with his playmaking prowess, garnering widespread admiration as he continues to defy Father Time in Year 23.
LeBron James Puts on Historic Passing Clinic vs. Rockets
With the fourth-seeded Lakers missing their star backcourt of Luka Dončić (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique), James was burdened with more responsibility to spearhead his squad’s offense.
Seemingly recognizing the importance of a team-wide effort, the four-time MVP took it upon himself to get his teammates going early on. James tallied 8 assists in the first quarter alone, setting up the likes of Rui Hachimura, Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Luke Kennard for easy shots inside and out.
With his passing clinic, James set a career high for most assists in a single postseason quarter, as well as a Lakers record.
Continuing to dissect the fifth-seeded Rockets’ defense in the second quarter, the 41-year-old reached double-figure assists, becoming the oldest player with 10-plus dimes in a playoff game in NBA history.
Another record for The King.

With Houston lacking a traditional point guard and its top scorer, Kevin Durant, sitting out Game 1 with a right knee contusion, James dictated the pace of play throughout the night, with his dialed-in effort making waves on X.
“LeBron looks like a solid No. 1 option in the playoffs at 41 years old. Nobody has ever done this. Insane,” Legion Hoops reacted.

“LeBron, back in his old maestro role, had 8 assists in the first quarter! I’ve always said he’s a generational passer,” veteran NBA analyst Skip Bayless lauded James.
“14 years later, same look. LeBron is locked in 🔒,” ESPN wrote.

James finished with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 13 assists, and 2 steals as LA held on for a 107-98 victory to take a 1-0 series lead at Crypto.com Arena.
While James didn’t deliver an eye-popping scoring tally, he picked his spots, shooting an efficient 9-for-15 (60%) and scoring multiple timely baskets in the fourth quarter. This includes a straightaway 3-pointer to extend his team’s lead to 13 points with 8:22 remaining.

Benefiting from the veteran forward’s playmaking, Kennard registered a playoff career-high 27 points and 5 triples, shooting a blistering 9-for-13 (69.2%) overall.
The sharpshooter was one of five Lakers to finish with 14-plus points.
