Victor Wembanyama dominated in his return from a concussion during Sunday’s 114-93 Game 4 road win over the Portland Trail Blazers. However, according to the San Antonio Spurs superstar, he could have returned sooner if he had been permitted.
After posting a historic stat line, the 7-foot-4 big man called out the NBA’s concussion protocol, underscoring his discontent with the whole process.

Victor Wembanyama Gets Blunt on NBA’s Concussion Protocol After Spurs’ Game 4 Victory
Wembanyama entered the league’s concussion protocol on Tuesday after suffering a hard fall early in San Antonio’s 106-103 Game 2 home loss.
Immediately after the news broke, ESPN’s Shams Charania shed light on the two-time All-Star’s situation.
“Per NBA guidelines, Wembanyama cannot return to full participation for 48 hours but can resume gradual activity in 24 hours as long as his symptoms don’t worsen,” Charania wrote.
“Then he must hit several benchmarks while being symptom-free before he is cleared to play. He’ll then require clearance from team doctor in consultation with league protocol director.”
Wembanyama was not cleared to return until Sunday, and while the Spurs fell behind by as many as 19 points in the second quarter, his imposing defense proved to be the catalyst for their comeback. They flipped the script in the second half, outscoring Portland 73-35, including a 13-0 run to begin the third quarter.
The French phenom finished with a staggering 27 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, and 7 blocks, with his co-star De’Aaron Fox adding a team-best 28 points.

With those numbers, Wembanyama became the first player to record 25-plus points and 5-plus blocks in his first career road postseason outing since the 1973-74 season, when blocks became an official stat. He also joined Houston Rockets legend Hakeem Olajuwon as one of only two players to post that stat line in the playoffs.

Still, Wembanyama voiced his displeasure with his return-to-play process postgame, stressing that his frustration was not directed at San Antonio’s medical staff.
“The Spurs have done an amazing job. I’m very unhappy about the way the protocol has been handled by other parties. But my staff has been amazing,” Wembanyama said in his walk-off interview. “I’ve been really healthy starting on day one after the injury. The injury was weird, though. It was funny.”
When asked to clarify his discontent in his postgame press conference, the 22-year-old declined to elaborate.
“I don’t want to get into the details. I don’t want it to become a distraction. Ask me again after the end of the season,” Wembanyama added. “But again, all the doctors, especially on the Spurs, the doctors all around, they were great. Took great care of me. But the way the situation was handled was very disappointing.”
“I don’t want it to become a distraction… ask me again after the season…”
Victor Wembanyama clearly wasn’t happy with something during the NBA’s concussion clearance process.

According to The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, “when Wembanyama was not cleared by the NBA to play ahead of Game 3, he requested an examination by an independent neurologist in accordance with the NBA concussion policy.”
The big man then reportedly “informed the independent neurologist that he was ready to play and completed an interview regarding his symptoms, but the NBA determined Wembanyama was not ready to return.”
Fortunately for the Spurs, Wembanyama’s injury ultimately cost him only one game, with the Western Conference juggernaut taking care of business in his absence in Friday’s 120-108 Game 3 road win.
Boasting a 3-1 lead in the first-round series, Wembanyama and Co. are now in a prime position to close out the seventh-seeded Trail Blazers during Tuesday’s Game 5 home clash.
