The Cleveland Cavaliers have been active in 2025 NBA free agency, acquiring guard Lonzo Ball from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for forward Isaac Okoro. The team re-signed guard Sam Merrill to a four-year, $38 million deal, while unrestricted free agent Ty Jerome appears likely to depart. These roster moves have intensified discussion about the future of Cleveland’s core four: Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen.

Brian Windhorst Weighs In On Cavs’ Core 4 Future Amid Blockbuster 2025 NBA Free Agency
ESPN insider Brian Windhorst recently addressed speculation about Cleveland’s star players during an appearance on ESPN Cleveland. He emphatically dismissed trade rumors: “Absolutely, no question about it,” Windhorst stated about the group returning. “Put the ball in Evan Mobley’s hands… He can handle the ball. He can create more, and he can stress out defenses better.”

Windhorst also highlighted 2024 first-round pick Jaylon Tyson as a potential contributor.
“When you are a second-apron team, you gotta get something out of your draft picks.” His analysis follows Cleveland’s successful regular season, where the team secured the Eastern Conference’s top seed after hiring head coach Kenny Atkinson and extending Mitchell, Mobley, and Allen last summer.
Despite their 64-18 record, the Cavaliers’ playoff run ended abruptly with a second-round exit in five games. This postseason disappointment fueled offseason trade speculation, particularly around Allen.
Caleb Crowley of King James Gospel linked the center to the Charlotte Hornets after they traded Mark Williams to Phoenix. Allen, a 2022 All-Star who averaged 16.1 points and 10.8 rebounds that season, posted 13.5 points and 9.7 rebounds this year.
Cleveland’s front office seems to believe its core four, supplemented by strategic additions, possess championship-caliber potential. The organization’s ability to enhance depth while retaining key players will ultimately determine its title-contender prospects.
