‘I Don’t Play Those Games’ — LeBron James Reacts to Narrative That Bronny James Is Only on Lakers Due to Nepotism

LeBron James pushes back on the nepotism narrative surrounding Bronny James and explains where he draws the line regarding his family.

As LeBron James mulls his future beyond his historic 23rd campaign, the Los Angeles Lakers star continues to offer unwavering support for his son and teammate, Bronny James.

Speaking about the ongoing nepotism claims that have followed Bronny throughout his first two seasons, LeBron made it clear where he draws the line regarding his family.

LeBron James Addresses Nepotism Narrative Surrounding Bronny James’ NBA Career

Since being drafted No. 55 in the 2024 NBA Draft and making history by playing alongside his father, the prevailing sentiment from the NBA world has been that Bronny is only getting a shot in the pros due to his family name.

Despite the arguably unfair narrative, the 21-year-old has steadily improved his game, benefiting from his NBA G League experience as he seeks to carve out rotation minutes with LA.

Bronny took noticeable strides as a 3-point shooter and playmaker to close the 2025-26 regular season and start the playoffs, earning extra playing time while his star teammates Luka Dončić (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique) were sidelined. Meanwhile, the 6-foot-2 guard continued to deliver his signature feisty defensive effort.

Bronny’s production still pales in comparison to his father’s at the same age, given that LeBron entered the NBA as one of the most hyped No. 1 draft prospects of all time. Still, his improvements have earned the approval of Lakers fans, who regularly called for the sophomore to get more minutes off the bench amid LA’s 10-game postseason run.

This was especially true after Reaves’ mid-playoffs return cut into Bronny’s opportunities. LeBron appears to be relishing every chance he can get to play with his son, though.

In an interview with Time titled “How LeBron James Redefined the Modern Athlete,” the 22-time All-Star revealed that becoming the first father-son duo to assist each other on baskets ranks as his proudest achievement.

“Out of all the sh*t I’ve done in basketball, that’s the best accomplishment I’ve ever had,” LeBron said.

LeBron also pushed back on the nepotism narrative surrounding Bronny, adding that he refuses to tolerate any personal shots at his family.

“The kid has earned his right to be a professional athlete,” LeBron shared. “The thing you’re not going to do is throw stones at us as a family. I’m not letting that sh*t slide, because I know what I’ve created because of what I didn’t have [growing up].

“So, if you want to talk about the kid, that he shouldn’t be an NBA player, I don’t care about that. As long as you don’t get to the fatherhood piece. I don’t play those games.”

LeBron will soon be faced with a difficult decision in free agency, as he could stay in LA and finish his career alongside his son or seek out potentially better chances to win his fifth NBA championship elsewhere. Regardless of his next move, the four-time MVP will be sure to have Bronny’s back for the remainder of his career.
