Love him or hate him, Kobe Bryant was one of the NBA’s biggest trendsetters in the 21st century. His one-on-one dominance and elite defense made him one of the best shooting guards ever. Even years after his tragic death, players still coin the term “Mamba Mentality” after all these years because of Bryant’s rep and his nickname “The Black Mamba.”
Bryant spent his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers and is regarded as one of the best players to grace the court in history. He won five NBA Championships with the Lakers before retiring in 2016. Let’s revisit his wins and how he performed during that season.
Revisiting Kobe Bryant’s NBA Championship Wins
2000 – Los Angeles Lakers Defeat Indiana Pacers
Bryant’s rise to the top of the NBA started when Phil Jackson took over as coach of the Lakers in 1999. A season later, he won his first NBA Championship alongside Shaquille O’Neal.
He averaged 22.5 points through the regular season and backed up with several clutch performances in the playoffs, including in Game 4 of the Finals against the Indiana Pacers. Brant missed multiple games due to injuries in the Finals but finished the playoffs with 21 points per game.
2001 – Los Angeles Lakers Defeat Philadelphia 76ers
It was a year when disagreements between Bryant and O’Neal began to surface, with the Lakers winning eleven fewer games than the previous season. However, they went berserk in the playoffs, losing just one game in the entire run as Bryant had the best season of his career and averaged over 29 points in the regular season and the finals.
They swept past the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, and San Antonio Spurs to set up the finals against the 76ers. The Lakers lost just one game, the first of the finals, in overtime before winning the next four on the trot for their second consecutive NBA Championship.
2002 – Los Angeles Lakers Defeat New Jersey Nets
Bryant’s improved playing time in 2001 saw him play a then-career-high 80 games, and he responded with an impressive 25.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game to lead the Lakers to 58 wins. However, contrary to their dominant playoff run from the previous season, it was a battle for the Lakers to complete the three-peat.
After winning the first two rounds comfortably, they took on the Kings in the Western Conference Finals, and it stretched to a seven-game series. They eventually got the better of their division rivals and took on the Nets in the finals in a series that cemented Bryant’s “clutch player” status. He averaged 26.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game in the Finals to become the youngest player in history to win three NBA titles.
2009 – Los Angeles Lakers Defeat Orlando Magic
The three-peat run was followed by a series of playoff heartbreaks for the Lakers and Bryant, but they eventually broke free in 2009 against the Magic. It was the Lakers’ second straight NBA Finals appearance after losing to the Boston Celtics in 2008, and Bryant performed phenomenally to win his fourth championship.
He averaged 32.4 points, 7.4 assists, 5.6 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game through the five-game series, and picked up his first NBA Finals MVP trophy.
2010 – Los Angeles Lakers Defeat Boston Celtics
It was a year when Bryant captivated the world with his clutch play, making a flurry of buzzer-beating shots throughout the season. He led the Lakers to the No. 1 seed in the West and blazed through the playoffs to set up a clash with the Celtics in the finals.
The series stretched to seven games, but Bryant pulled off a stunning heist in the final moments and overcame a 13-point third-quarter deficit in Game 7 to win his fifth NBA Championship. He earned his second straight NBA Finals MVP after averaging 28.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.
